We spent the day exploring the Welland Canal, joining it at Lock 1, and driving down the parkway. There are trails and cycle paths alongside the canal with plenty of good views. the museum at Lock 3 is brilliant, extremely interesting, full of excellent displays and exhibits, unlike most museums it is free although a donation is requested, and well worthwhile too. there is a bridge and platform for viewing the enormous freighters that pass through the canal lock, there are about nine of them, and it takes a long time for these giants to enter, the lock to be filled/emptied, and then leave. the museum lists the ships that will be passing through each day. we saw at least 3 in transit, one twice. it's a lovely and cheap way to spend a sunny day, and further down at Thorold there is another viewing area, less sophisticated and doesn't cater for coach parties, but very charming nonetheless. this is where the Kissing Stone is, and apparently the sailors like to jump off whilst going through the lock, and kiss the stone for luck. Welland is also worth a look around too, with pleasant gardens and walks.

We love cycling the Circle Niagara tour and the Welland Canal Parkways tour is the best part. The trail is paved, has no car traffic and passes a number of locks which are great tourist attractions. The trail is flat and suitable for all levels of cycling skills.

Poor signaling on the canal trail needs improvement between Thorold and Port Colborne. Strong winds, however, we enjoyed watching the rowing team on the canal. Portion between Ste-Catherine to Thorold is very smooth, 'S' shaped path helps ascent by bike this portion from one lock to the other.

Trail is good ... but bumpy at times but you ride down the whole Welland canal which is interesting to see, especially the locks and big ships. However, there are quite a few points in this trail where you reach an intersection and you cannot tell which way to go. The signs could be better improved to help navigate the trail.

We did the overall Niagara biking loop and had a great three day holiday, based out of Pt Colbourne. There's lots of nice scenery, the trails are generally well marked, and there are fun stops like the locks and wineries.

Very interesting if you actually get to see a ship in the locks being raised or lowered. We did and it was very cool.

Great pathway along the Welland Canal from Port Colborne to Lake Ontario. Well marked and maintained next to the canal waterway and past local attractions like the numerous rowing clubs and venues. Seeing the boats and locks up close is still the biggest thrill.

Well groomed paved trails. You can go from Hamilton to Port Colborne and take in some beautiful scenery.

We have biked several portions of this lovely bike trail and so enjoy being next to the canal on a paved route. Well worth a day or two's visit. Only minor complaint is there is a real lack of signs along the trail--to indicate how far you've ridden, where the sights or towns are located, etc.

While doing the Lake Erie Circle Tour, we stopped in Port Colborne, Ontario to see the Lock on the Welland Canal. While there, two ships went through the lock. That was amazing. So interesting to see how they enter & exit the locks. There's a very nice viewing area you can watch from with benches along the canal. Across the street is a little fish & ships restaurant with outside tables which was excellent. Not fancy but excellent.
