There lies some of the island history. It's one of the most spectacular view of Port. Elizabeth where the yacht enchor, and the local ferry goes and comes, It's also a lovely view of some of the white sandy beaches on the island.
Not an easy walk so we drove, the roads are very steep & winding, but a neat look out point. Imagine firing one of those cannons back in the day!
We walked up to here from Port Elizabeth - took about 20-30 minutes. Not too much to see once you're there: a few cannon and a lookout point. Very nice views though and a nice stroll to get there around the port - so not a wasted journey.Would recommend this if looking for something to do while on Bequia.
Hamilton Fort is a lovely spot, a great bit of the islands heritage and a wonderful place to relax unwind and take in the cool breeze and view of Port Elizabeth. It is a must see sight on Bequia for anyone who visit the island. I think it is In need of some TLC though.
The original gun emplacements overlooked the harbour and the guns were never intended to be in their current location- hence how do you call it a fort? It is a good vantage point for overlooking the bay and is worth a visit. The road is steep, windy and sometimes not in good condition - we were glad we had a taxi to take us on a tour.
We hired an open side transport for a few hours, lovely views, we could see our ship Adonis in the bay
You get a great view of the island from here, it's a bit of a hike, but worth it.If you don,t fancy the walk there are plenty of local taxis that will take you up there for quite a reasonable charge
Hamilton Fort is perched atop the north west point of Admiralty Bay and little remains of it but the cannons pointing out to sea. It's actually surprising that the cannons dated 1717 are still there and haven't been reclaimed for their metal content. No real history can be learned from visiting the site, but it does afford a great view of the harbour and all the yachts moored there.2 minute ride from town in a taxi or a fairly steep walk for those inclined to walk to it.
Not for us, not that interesting. There are far better things to do with your time while on Bequia. I guess if you are a big history buff you might disagree with this but it was not the highlight of our holiday!
Great views across Admiralty bay towards town a d the main beaches on Bequia. Worth a stop if on an island tour.
