This was the last place we visited on our hike and we loved it.The glacier is so imposing it's almost other-worldly - hard to comprehend the scale. We didn't have time to do any of the tours, but that would be a good idea if you can. After an amazing five-day hike, arriving at the Glacier somehow felt appropriate - the end of the world.Loved it.
Take the boat to see the glacier. Be sure you know that you get your ticket at the hotel and then a few minute drive further is the parking lot. You'll need 15 minutes to walk from the lot, over a foot bridge, on the sand to where the boat takes off. We went early in the morning and it was spectacular. My guess is the afternoon groups have more tourist groups.
This glacier is really impressive and as you walk further on the trial you have different spots to admire it. It is worth going until the last camp site to have a better look on the glacier
One of the most beautiful galciers of Patagonia. The boat ride from hotel Lago Grey is long and can be rough but it is very worthwile.
It was worth all the walking to have a view from the Glacier Grey! From the ferry to the first pass were you can finally see the glacier takes about two hours. After walking for about 4 hours you can have a great view from a small "beach" with icebergs and a great view of the glacier. If you want to walk a little more and cross some rivers ans hanging bridges, you can have an even better view of it. Seen it from above. There is a camp site close to the viewpoint and also a refuge that is quite comfortable, even though it is also quite expensive.
The boats are a bit minimalistic, but the ride is only about an hour; if the weather is tolerable you can stay out on the upper deck, which is quite the experience. The lake itself is incredible, surrounded by picturesque mountains. The glacier is icy-beautiful, but not very active in terms of "calving".
Enjoyed our trip to Glacier Grey. Be prepared for some very cold temperatures the closer you get to the glacier. There had to be a good 15-20 degree drop in temperature once we got to the glacier. Be prepared two-thirds of the way in to pick up people who had been kayaking along the shore, which took approx. 1/2 hour to get everyone on board and settled since they needed to be taken by small boat to reach our boat. Once everyone was settled in, we spent a fair amount of time taking pictures of this amazing glacier and the incredible surroundings! It was worth the trip!
Its a place you must visit. Wonderful, amazing, impressive. Perfect combination with Torres del Paine.
Park in the car park and walk across the wobbly bridge controlled by the rangers. A short walk through shady woodland brings you to grey lake. From the lake a boat can be taken to the glacier. It is a 3 hour round trip. Walk across the glacial moraine bank to the right side and view the glacier from their. The mountains reflect in the lake. There are small icebergs from the glacier on the lake.
When coming from Refugio Grey, be sure to hike to the *second* suspension bridge for the best views (if you do not planning on doing the 'O' circuit or heading up the John Gardner pass).
