interesting historical site, detailed information, nice view, museum on site, welcoming guide, a piece of history
It's a part of an ancient stadium. There are benches where people can sit, sometimes during the summer there can be watched historical movies or just listening music. At the night is very nice place with all these lights around!
The antique stadium use to accommodate about 30,000 spectators. It's amazes me what actually runs below the town of Plovdiv. I can only imagine if they dig the whole "Glavna" Str. what they will find underneath.
We got there very early in the morning and were the only ones in the theater.
Beautiful stained glass accents the lovely dining room. I really enjoyed the rabbit, which I was told is a fairly common dish in Bulgaria. The great location in Old Plovdiv adds another reason to visit this restaurant.
Liked it all. Great people. Like everything else in this town, the hiking to get from place to place requires stamina and determination. However, anybody will be pleased to tell you how and where to go.
Walking through the pedestrianised are one discovers this old arena. Not much is exposed but it is free to enter and one gets an inkling of what it must have been like to be part of 30000 people watching gladiatorial events. It is hoped that the town planners continue to restore this and the other sites around the city.
It is not a big monument, but first of all – it is an ancient stadium (at leat part of it, there are not many of those left) and it is really nicely fit into the modern (more modern than ancient I should say) architecture of Plovdiv. If in Plovdiv, the place is nice to see.
We found Philippopolis to be a nicely restored Roman era area of Plovdiv. It borders old Town Plovdiv and a main, pedestrian town center, shopping promenade. The restorers did a very good job of blending in Philippopolis with both. We only wished that it wouldn't have been quite so hot during our visit.
