I really had no idea that I was going to find ancient Roman ruins during my short visit to Plovdiv. If you are anywhere near, you should definitely make the trek to see this stellar theater. The ancient marble steps are worn from centuries of sandals. The beautiful, scenic setting would make any modern developer jealous.
except the good location and great view this amphitheater was nothing spectacular to offer, especially because I visited it after the Pula theater
You will find the Roman Amphitheater on the way up to the top of the Old City. The main road goes under it which makes it even more dramatic. I was out for dinner and managed to see traditional Bulgarian music and dance being performed in the theater as it is still being used today.
Did u ever expect to see this type of ancient sites here? I am sure you were not. With its size and well - preserved status, this theatre is still hosting summer concerts and operas with the most magnificent view you could ever imagine. Try to picture this... the sunset in the summer with the great mountain lit in pink, purple - ish, red tones and you sitting there in the excited buzz of the audience waiting for the concert to begin... it is an amazing experience!
If in Plovdiv, this is an absolute must to see. It's beautifully preserved and the view of Plovdiv is nice.
Really only a small part is restored as it lies ubder the main city street of the modern city, but you get an idea of the enormity of the place and its importance to the romans. It held olimpic type of games, gladiator fights, etc.
Situated in the Old Town, this place just serves as an energy accumulator. You can practically feel and touch the history. It isn't crowded and it's also very romantic so it is perfect for couples!
