Attended a Saturday evening mass service and found the church to be beautiful on the inside as well as the outside!!
the formal church has remarkable ornate Rococo interiorIt is one of the few churches that had retained it medieval character
I have been in all the other cathedrals/churches in Salzburg over the many times visiting but somehow I missed this one, one of the oldest churches in Salzburg. Magnificent! Seems that the tour groups don't go here so you must! The ceiling is a true work of art in itself. I find this IS the church to go to in Salzburg if you want peace, prayer and beauty! DO NOT MISS!
The Franziskaner Church is in the same neighbourhood as the Dome and the buildings surrounding it. At least I prefer this church to the Dome - it has fewer visitors and feels more "genuine" than the Dome being the general show piece. If you want a feel for the Franciskans, a not overwhelming taste of a baroque church and some peace and quite for a bit of meditation maybe, this church is your refuge.
Even though we aren't Catholic, we enjoy participating in Mass at Cathedrals in Europe. We had heard that Franziskanerkirche had a 7:00 p.m. mass on the evening we arrived in Salzburg. Not knowing that it was associated with the Franciscans, we were taken by the sincerity of the experience. It didn't feel like this was the "7:00 pm. showing," but a genuine religious experience. It isn't the largest Cathedral in the city, but it really fits. While it is difficult to call any Cathedral "simple," it is an apt word to describe the connection being inside of it has with the divine.
A beautiful church, simple in some parts with amazing tall, slender, unadorned columns and then a very ornate gilded high altar. The ceiling is beautiful; some of the side chapels are riotously decorated. There is a peaceful atmosphere here. Well worth visiting.
it is 16th century gothic church. It very huge and impressive inside but also quite humble. old town area there are nice and huge churches this is one of them. Classically huge walls, nice paintings and sculptures inside. If you are lucky, you can encounter while somebody is playing organ.
A magnificent church both outside and inside. The interior is just beautiful and there is plenty to see inside. At the time I went in, there was a big tour but they weren't being loud and I was able to find somewhere to sit and marvel at the beautiful interior. There is plenty to see within this one building and it is not the place that gets advertised a lot. I just came across it between two visits to attractions. Glad also that you aren't forced to pay an entrance fee or followed by people with charity boxes which appears to happen a lot these days with religious buildings.
Saw many people going into this church on a Sunday morning. Followed them in and was surprised to find a Catholic mass beginning. The church is almost entirely of stone. Nothing ornate, just 5 columns of stone rising up to hold the roof. Very different from the ornate churches of Italy or even the USA. A rather plain, yet powerful place of worship.
