It's a rip off for a tour. They charge you $10.00 dollars per person and you are only taken to two rooms. I honestly thought we'd see and hear more. The last room "the ladies parlour" was very lovely and had some neat art and objects to look and read about, but our student tour guide was eager to hustle everyone out of the room. Save your money for another historical home or museum.
While I didn't care much for some of Mr. Flager's taste in architecture or decor, this building is something to see. The tour lasted about an hour and covered the lobby, enormous dining room still used by the students, and the "ladies" salon/lounge where single men were allowed only with an escort (it would not have been proper!). The Tiffany windows and chandeliers are a marvel of glass creations and shouldn't be missed!
The history of Saint Augustine is so rich, and Henry Flagler's influence is everywhere, but Flagler College is not one of the high points of our month-long stay in the city. Its architecture is interesting and well-preserved, and the photos of wealthy New Yorkers in the Flagler Hotel's heyday were interesting, but it's not worth more than about 10 minutes of your time.
Our tour was more than wonderful. We were amazed by the architecture and beautiful paintings. Loved the college and hope to send my son here. Where else can you go to the restroom and see a beautiful fireplace in it. The whole college is beautiful. Love it.
The dining hall is full of magnificent architecture. We were a little disappointed that we were not served the normal dining hall fare as our daughter was making a decision about attending. The buffet that was set up had a good variety. The chicken was particularly good but all of the vegetables were under cooked. It may have been due to trying to keep up with the large number of guests. Besides the views not impressed with the food.
Flagler College is a great liberal arts college that began as an upscale hotel owned by Henry Flagler. The rich and famous one stayed here to enjoy America's oldest city. As a college the original hotel is maintained in the splendor of early days and used by the college as a student dining hall. The free tour through the college introduces you to the history of the college and the City of St. Augustine.
I went on two tours of the college the month of February. On the first tour we were hosted by a senior history major. He was intelligent, witty, able to answer everyone's questions and make the place come alive. On the second tour we weren't quite so fortunate but still worth the time to see the beautiful building, gorgeous art and hear the history of the Flagler family and the college.
