great place to see great films, small theater spaces, good prices and membership gets free popcorn fairly regularly But, it's about the film selection!
Shows excellent selection of films and the atmosphere is great. The price is typical for any movie theater. This is the place to go see films.
When we want to see an independent film, want to be in Santa Cruz for dining or just the vibes, we choose "the Nick." It has several theaters, some small but film choices and the snack bar are not ordinary.
For a smaller population center, Santa Cruz is blessed to have so many fine independent films shown at this theater group. There are actually three locations, including Aptos. Check the excellent internet site for showtimes. Prices are less than the big theaters, with senior discounts for those over 60. I am grateful to have this resource in our town!
Nickelodeon Theatre always has the interesting movies & first run films. Some hard to find that show onluy here, 2 of the theatres are very small, so come early for a seat.Sister Theatre, Del Mar , on Pacific Garden mall is a vintage gem, showing first run films & special showings. Both are perfect to watch favorite movies...any popcorn fresh!
The best popcorn in town and still cost less than the the chain theaters. This for the locals.3 different theaters , one is a restored historial theater, not to be missed
Always a great selection of movies, good popcorn and a cozy, movie/film lover feeling! We general head for this theater or it's sister theater down the block to find the best Indys!
I only go there for a "must-see" film that is not showing any where else in the county and I do not want to drive a distance. I know some consider "the Nick" a local treasure, but I think the seating, screens and sound are something out of the 1950's.
So if you want to find the latest foreign film, or critically acclaimed indie film, you will find it at the nick. Being a university town, this is the one heater that you can go to to find that small film you read about in the NY times. The theaters are generally pretty small with limited seating, but you won't find the movies they run in most major theaters. Keeping it small, also keeps it nice and personal, it's a gem for real movie buffs
Like the varied venues: always a movie for one's mood - state of mind. worth the drive to "downtown"; staff is friendly; theatre seats are comfortable.
