This church is so simple inside and whilst you visit medieval music is playing quietly in the background. Outside you look over a valley with Tuscan cypresses. It has such a lovely feeling about it.It is free to visit but there is a box for offerings.
At the end of one day of touring to Tuscan hill towns, we stopped in Sovana to see a "church". Our guide, a good friend from Orbetello, began to tell us how ancient this structure was, and also how a part of it was used in the Spanish Inquisition to question citizens. To stand at the altar, and know what went on there, sent a chill up my spine and left me unable to touch the stone table without wanting to tell the truth! It is not elegant like churches in the major cities, but reflects the agricultural heritage of the region in it's simplicity. It's an interesting ride to get there, and you won't be disapointed by the view and the sights at the top. Watch out for sheep herds crossing the road on the way back!
Sovana is a gorgeous little town with wonderful Etruscan ruins nearby including the fascinating Tomba Ildebranda. Lots of wild flowers and woodland with stream.
Sovana is a sleepy quaint Tuscan village, at this time of year anyway. It was worth the visit to what is really 2 ancient streets, beautifully preserved and decorated with beautiful geraniums and other potted plants. We visited the cathedral, lovely frescoes and an interesting building with certainly lots of history.
