Don't miss walking around this very old church, oozing with history. Kudos to the city for not having torn it down during the city's growth and expansion. There it sits, protected in the hotel courtyard, for generations to come.
This is a "must" if you want to see real church history in Sofia. Built in 3rd century with 3 layers of painted frescos on ceiling-- newest is from 14th century!! Small Orthodox Church still functioning; easy to access through left gates in front of Presidential offices (guarded). Roman era footings around the church (as good as any in Rome, and free!!)
I visited the rotunda with a free a tour and the guide was explaining that this is the oldest building, there are also some ruins from the Byzantines empire so if you are in Sofia check it out the rotunda its behind the Presidents building so I recommend you to pass by
A 3rd century marvel....well excavated and preserved place..one of the oldest surviving Buildings...
Well it's a tiny survivor from 3rd century - that almost sums it out. The rotunda suffers from the omnipresent lack of information and "mise en valeur" like the French will put it. BUT if you fashion to assist closely at an Easter religious service, it's one of not many places in Sofia where you can do it. There few people and you could event access the interior... and during these late spring nights the church is just fascinating.
In the city center go and see a lot of ancient places in the vicinity. recommended places are the archeological museum, the national art gallery, some churches.
Very well preserved, being the oldest building in Sofia, it's an interesting trip to the past. Although being very small it's definetly worth a visit
We attended a Sunday morning service in this ancient church, nestled behind the Presidential buildings. Inside, the warm, candle lit, frescoed interior provided a peaceful backdrop to the reverential singing from a trio of choir ladies. This was a wonderful experience which we are glad not to have missed on our visit to Sofia.
situated inside the presidential palace, it is a great place to go.Very cultural and enchanting.Very symbolic of old Sofia
We visited this site because it seemed like there were a lot of good reviews on it. However, there is not that much to see at this site. If you are pressed for time, there are a lot better sites to see.
