After reading lot of nice reviews of this beach we decided to see. The road conditions are not that good, but after leaving the trail going downstairs to the beach we saw why it gets tons of compliments. Warm and blue water, and when the sun comes up it turns into a "mirror" reflecting the sun in the ocean. During the low tide, natural pools appears on the reefs. Walking to the right of Curuípe beach, close to the rocks it is possible to observe turtles. Going more to the right, there is a trail to Caraíva up on the cliffs, where there is a belvedere to enjoy the beautiful view of Espelho beach.Negative point to the extremely expensive food (R$85 for a chicken fillet, R$ 130 for a moqueca).
Up till 5-6 years ago a wonderful hidden beach some 15 km south of Trancoso. Unfortunately new constructions of houses, pousadas and restaurants, have invaded this idyllic spot ( with not too many architectural thinking involved). The worst part however are the busloads of day tourists who arrive in the morning and spoil any lost touch of privacy and tranquility. Some people still cannot see that some times less is more ! What i still would recommend is getting their walking from Trancoso along very deserted beaches. It will take you some 4 hours, you need to cross a few rivers ( one pretty large one) but generally there are some local ferrymen at hand. You to check the tides, as you need low tide to arrive at the praia de espelho. Don't forget to take water along your trip.
It is an exotic beach with charming inns, one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. The bars and restaurants on the beach offer drinks, fruit juices, snacks, seafood, typical dishes from Bahia and other culinary sophistication in a peaceful setting with a wonderful decoration. The beach is easily accessible by dirt roads south of Trancoso. But it is worthwhile sacrifice to get to her.It features on-site restaurants and is well quiet. I recommend to anyone who enjoys beautiful places.
Espelho is just one of those paradise beaches you can really unplug and relax. The 1h30-2h drive from Porto Seguro - mostly on a bumpy dirt road - is worth it. That's what keeps the crowds away. Up on the cliff there's the Outeiro das Brisas condo, with colourful homes that recreate the rustic style of Bahia colonial towns. A few pousadas (B&Bs) can be found there, among which Brisas do Espelho, with a friendly staff and great food.Down at Espelho beach there are several rustic and very sell set up pousadas where you can either stay or enjoy the day using the chairs and shades in exchange for having drinks and lunch with them. Recanto do Espelho is a great one, with a WONDERFUL moqueca. Further down the beach, to the right, there's a creek, across which there's Silvinha's famous 2 table restaurant you need to book for freshly made food on her daily mood with a thai touch. For those staying at the Outeiro das Brisas, there's a beach club available at the beach, with chairs, shades, beach service, restaurant and swimming pool. Make sure to have the beautiful passionfruit-tangerine caipiroska with some fresh deep fried fish with lemongrass.
Perhaps it was the first of many beaches in Brazil (outside of Rio) on this trip, but it seemed a little overhyped. Overall it rates a 4/5 but obviously it is trendy (read: overpriced). Go to Caraiva if you only have time for one beach in this area.
