Wondering from one Roman monument to another makes you end up on the central plaza. The one in Trier shows how well the buildings are preserved and give a very pleasant feeling. Pubs, restaurant and historical sites stand side by side. Take the time to look around
nice square with a lot of restaurants and cafes where you can sit and watch all that is happening on the square. Very nice old houses in various colours.
Always something going on - farmers' market, wine tasting, etc. Lovely old buildings surround this pleasant space.
We recently visited the Hauptmarkt whilst on a coach trip to four Christmas markets in Germany, France and Switzerland, and unfortunately it was our least favourite. Having toured the lovely, traditional town of Bernkastel in the morning( which we had been enchanting), we found Metz to be ultra modern with only a small area dedicated to the festivities, much of which was geared towards food and drink. The normal large Saturday crowds were out in droves, as Trier has an extensive retail centre with many big name stores to attract them. This definitely spoiled the atmosphere for us. Less ho, ho, ho more no, no, no I'm afraid.
Interesting old square (open area) in the walking zone of the city. Very interesting baroque/rococo fountain gets all the pictures but the market cross (from 958) should be the focus.
If you are there from end of November to December be sure to make the trip to the Christmas Market. It is truly magical! Beautifully decorated and lovely stalls where you can do some shopping and ofcourse enjoy the local specialties including mulled wine.
Beautiful terraces to have a drink and just to relax, just imagine to live in those days, we had a few drinks just to see all the people strolling by (this is on its own an attraction)Enjoy, be safe and keep smiling
We loved this Christmas market and having lived in Germany for twenty years have plenty of experience in visiting the various city markets. This market was buzzing with fun and although wintery cold there was no snow but one needed to wrap up well however there was plenty of excellent Glühwein on offer to help the warming process! Lots of stalls offering a wide variety of foods and Christmas gifts.
Pretty good variety of shops and restaurants in this very historical town. It was a time for the traditional Christmas market when we visited. Very nice.
