My second visit to this wonderful church. Outside it reminds me of slabs of ice and wonderfully reflects the snowy winter landscape of the region. Inside there is a wonderful stained glass window and lights hanging from the ceiling like icicles. I felt the entrance tickets were a little overpriced though.
Walking across the bridge and back was very pleasant. Arctic Cathedral is very ascetic, but in combination with the midnight concert definitely with visiting.
If you're in Tromso, I really recommend to visit this cathedral. We took a walk across the bridge, which was really nice, you have a great view over the city. The cathedral looks great from the outside, you have to pay 40 NOK to get inside, I'm not quite sure it's worth it. I mean it's nice from the inside too, but nothing spectular I guess.
An architecturally fascinating structure which really makes a mark across the whole area. Costs about 40 NOK to get in and only one space when inside so may not suit everyone. Shame the location of the screen behind the altar hides some of the stained glass window especially at the bottom where you can just see the skull in the right hand corner.
Cathedral was not opened ,when we were there. Did not want to wait as it was very cold and pavement was very slippery. Viewed from the outside, and saw the colourful glass -stained window. Not much else to see. Admission 40 NKR
From outside looks interesting with the straight lines, inside didn't impressed me so much, just simple Nordic style. Maybe at night when it has all the colours at least outside is prettier.
A good space just to be in and look around or sit in - bright and welcoming. Strange pictures in the back - we never found out the story of the oil painting of the funeral...
I visited the Arctic Cathedral twice while in Tromso. Once to tour and wander around in the evening and then on another night for a concert. Both visits were quite enjoyable. If you only have a bit of time, it would probably suffice to just see from the outside - make sure to walk all the way around. From my hotel in town, I walked over the bridge to the Cathedral. I got some pretty pictures of it as I approached. I highly recommend this option. The bus stops right next to the Cathedral so you can take the bus back if desired and not walk both ways.
The Midnight concert in the Cathedral was a beautiful and emotional performance by a singer, a pianist and a guy on a cello. As we sat her sweet voice was like an angels`....... pure and uplifting whist accompanied by a pianist who was at one with his piano and the good looking young man on the cello just just enhanced the performance. My visit to this area was a tribute to my late father who had served on the PQ17 Arctic Convoy in WW2 and as I lit a candle on my departure I felt very privileged to have shared this evening with fellow travellers.
This place, along with the Northern Light Cathedral at Alta, are instances of really interesting architecture.
