I must confess, it was images of Santa Maria dell'Isola that attracted me to Tropea...I enjoyed the shade it cast across the wonderful beach and the lights looked nice at night...but sadly, the reconstructed image is really only a glorious facade..but don't let that stop you from being allured to Tropea.
At the end of April, 2014 this site was closed to the public for ongoing work. It appears that the exterior of the church has been overly restored, inviting comparisons with a Lego building. Older photographs show a much more charming, slightly ruined building.
One of the nicest churches I've ever seen, a fantastic setting a centre piece of the town, really lovely at sunset and at night.
Unfortunately it was closed during our trip but even though it was still great to look at from a cafe at the other side of the town.
amazing view sitting atop this little hill on the waters edge - stunning. Be aware/respectful that it is a church and bare shoulders should be covered if you enter - they do provide a shawl if you dont have one.
We ate at Da Barbone! Fabulous fresh ingredients and great friendly service!! Renatto was our server, we really enjoyed him!!Da Barbone, Piazza Santa Maria, 89866 Ricadi, Italia
breathtaking, majestic and historic - well worth seeing
The church is lovely, high above the beach. The beach is gorgeous white sand. Crystal clear water, Gentle surf - a sunbather's delight. Car park just nearby, or you can walk down from the town (but the return walk will test your stamina!).
