It is a great medieval little town. It is situated on a rock and you can access it by stairs. The view from it is spectacular. There are many bars and restaurants where you can eat local sweet delicacy - tartuffo. However, be aware that most of them are closed during siesta (1pm. - 4pm). Tropea is full of little, narrow alleys, which are perfect for a romantic stroll :)
Beautiful historical town. A bit too touristy. Many steps to beach...beautiful view of Stromboli at sunset if you are lucky!
Beautiful city in the summer, on top of rock with easy stairs access to the beach. Locals very friendly, nice bars and restaurants. Other beautiful beaches in the region.
Although it took a couple of trains to get there it was well worth the effort, not as many tourists as some of the other places we visited, everyone was friendly, great food & wine & amazing sunsets
In the centre of a stretch of seashore interrupted by sparsely inhabited beaches of fine sand stands Tropea, a village we love for its rich artistic heritage and primarily for its being such a great getaway location. This enclave has been enriched by the glories of Greeks, Romans, among others, the Spanish,Arabs, and Normans who contributed to the city's past by building fabulous palazzos and monuments that we relish today. I suggest before you head on into town, take in the view from the tiny island of Santa Maria della Isola, where a superb vista is offered up of Tropea resting on the slope of Mount Poro. From here, the houses appear to be molded from the tufaceous rock that cradles them as they dangle above a slender stretch of sand at the foot of the mount. We enter the city through the large portal that was formed as a result of an earthquake back in 1783. Cathedral and churches dominate certain quarters, but the heart of the village is the 19th century Piazza Ercole, where historians Strabo and Pliny wrote plenty of material for us to pore over. At the end of the Corso Vittorio Emanuelle appears the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Isola, surrounded by the pristine waters of green and cobalt-blue.
We were sailing done the coast and stopped into Porto di Tropea one night. Like the town, but wouldn't recommend the harbour. We were directed to berth in front of the cafe which became the night club until 4 am. Spoiled our nice relaxing week. We would have been better rolling around on an anchor off Capo di Vaticano - that is beautful and quiet.
We stayed in a hotel on the edge of the old town, 5-minute walk into the centre. The old town has some wonderful history, churches and old buildings. We spent 2-days exploring the town and there was still plenty to see. Each afternoon we would wander down to the sandy beach for a swim in very warm, crystal clear waters - hard to beat. The monastery on a hill, surrounded with water, facing the town, offers some great photo opp's.We found most restaurants quite reasonably priced and the food good, it is after all a very tourist orientated town.We were very lucky to be there during the annual blues music festival - if you can time it for that it is definitely worthwhile, stages are set-up in various areas around town and the music is free.Summary: We stopped here for a few days while driving from Rome to Sicily, it is well worth a couple of nights if you can make it.
It's a nice village to walk around after you've spent a day at the beach. Well worth the experience. Tropea gives you the full experience, beach and sight seeing. I loved my time there.
We stayed near Tropea in a small village called Briatico. However we visited Tropea on a number of occasions both in the day and evening. It is like many Italian towns and villages lovely to walk around and see all the amazing buildings. The beach is small but very nice and like all the beaches in this part of Italy the sea is just so blue and clean. You can get a boat to the island of Stomboli which is a must to see the live volcano.
Tropea is charming and beautiful! My husband and I are from the U.S. and we are so pleased that we chose to go to southern italy!!!! Check out my blog to see pics and hear more about why we loved Tropea!!!https://danielle-greco-b8tb.squarespace.com
