Generally I'm creeped out by reenactment and try to avoid the actors at all cost. But at Fort Ticonderoga, they weren't creepy at all. They didn't try to be historical figures, rather they were doing the activities of people from the revolutionary war in period clothing. We ate at the onsite cafe and enjoyed our sandwiches and local beer. The museum holds extensive collection of swords and powder horns. We enjoyed our first time in a corn maze, too! Be sure to check out Mt. Defiance for beautiful panoramic view of the area. This would be a good place to picnic, as there are a number of picnic tables under a large shelter. I recommend this place to those people looking to learn about the American Revolution or the history around Lake Champlain.
Visiting here was my son's 13th birthday surprise. He loves history and has been asking to go here. It was a great day enjoyed by all of us. Loved how the workers are all dressed in real outfits from that time and our guide was very knowledgeable. The views are incredible. Kings Garden was beautiful. We also enjoyed eating at the restaurant. The maze was so much fun trying to figure it out as a family. I would recommend going here to all. Great family day out enjoying our history.
Excellent historical excursion. Take the free tour ad the guide is excellent. He explained the fort's chequered history in an interesting way that goes beyond the history books! Look behind all the doors in the museum - I think there might be a historical surprise behind one of them but we didn't dare go in!There is a beautiful garden in the grounds built by the wife of a previous owner, plus the house they built which was subsequently a hotel.
I don't usually do historical sites but I am glad we did this. What a beautiful area and the information we received during the tour was very interesting (the tour guide kept it light and fun). It is truly awesome to envision the events that took place there so many years ago that had a profound effect on our nation's history. The museum where the artifacts are displayed is amazing along with the real people still doing the jobs as they were so long ago (the cobbler for one). It is a beautiful ride up 9N from Lake George and well worth the trip.
All personnel, exhibits, amenities, and locationForwarded an amazingly Insightful day in the life ofThe American RevolutionaryWar. Repeat visit pending.
It was POURING rain, but we still spend a couple hours seeing the exhibits, the film, a lecture, and walking around. FOR SURE read the times of all the many programs BEFORE you arrive so you don't miss anything like we did. The movie is kind of hard to find, but well worth it as was the lecture (although it went on and on for an hour and we were standing the whole time). A must do and I will go again to finish it up (you can spend a lot of time here if you want to see it all).
I visited the Fort for the second time after thirty years. It was well worth the money and time if you want to know how this fort changed our history. This was the supply of cannon to fight the British in Boston, and because of this fort the American Navy begun. Hats off to the Green Mountain men for taking the fort. Make sure to go to Mount Defiance, the view alone is worth the time. The enactors are really into the history, and it's a wonderful thing that all should see so our history remains alive.
We visited on a cool rainy day in late October only a few days before the fort closed for the winter. About 12 percent of the fort is original but the restoration is excellent. The period rooms and displays are okay. The real benefit of a visit is talking with the interpreters who are friendly, knowledgeable, and well versed in the history of the fort and its times. We watched a demonstration of musket drill and firing; although there were only 3 visitors present, the interpreters gave as good a presentation as if there had been 30.The fort's history in the French & Indian War and Revolutionary War is complex, fascinating, and worth knowing. There is a good video explaining the history and an excellent exhibit of real (not copies) of uniforms from the 1760s and 1770s. The views from the ramparts are magnificent. The fort's interpretive emphasis comes during the summer months when there are many more visitors that in late October.By the way, the fort is privately owned; it is not a national park and is not operated by the federal government.
The Fort is not huge but it is so interesting and in such a lovely spot. The presentation as a re-enactment works so well and is so much more meaningful and not boring the way it might be otherwise. We also went to the top of Mount Defiance which gave amazing views out over the Lake and the Fort. Due to lack of time we did not visit the King's Garden.
There are costumed interpreters who are incredibly knowledgable and make history come alive. The displays are also very interesting with a really interesting variety of subjects. Now there is an exhibit of military fashion. There is a room with china and utensils for eating, a room explaining the many diseases soldiers had to contend with, etc. The Kings Garden is beautiful.
