The most important historical monument (as i read in a touristic guide) in Finland! Amazing beauty and historical treasures in it! A MUST visit monument if you travel to Finland!
When you go inside you are coming to the past - time of kings and queens. You gonna be imprested! If you are interesting in architecture for sure you will descover a lot of foundations from masters of that time.
I've seen a lot of cathedrals and basilicas across Europe. They all start to look the same after awhile. The Turku cathedral, with it's Nordic twists of Lutheranism and seafaring history was a pleasant surprise. It's truly a charming little place to wander into (complete with a small coffee bar where you can pick up a delicious beverage and snack.)It's little effort to get to, and definitely worth at least a quick wander while you are in Turku.
Turku Cathedral is called the Finnish national shrine. Although the name is not official, Turku Cathedral belongs to the most important historical buildings and is Finland's only medieval basilica The long construction period due to the cathedral represents several different styles of, inter alia, the Romanesque, Gothic and Gothic Revival style
Nice historical place. Nice atmosphere. People who like to visit authentic places definitely should visit this Cathedral.
Finland has grown around this church which is alongside Turku Castle the oldest building. Although the capital of Finland was moved to Helsinki in the 19th century, Turku Cathedral remains in the center of religious life in Finland. The church is absolutely worth a visit although it may appear less glamorous than Catholic and Ortodox churces in other parts of Europe. However it's a good place to sit down for a while and meditate and just inhale the spirityality.
Even you would not consider yourself so religious, Turku Cathedral is a good starting point for 3,5 km walk along the river from Cathedral to Turku Castle. Of course if you want to see all the “seven bridges” the starting point should be further up the river. Around the Cathedral you can smell the history and that is not so common in Turku nowadays and inside you can find some graves of notable people in history including Queen of Sweden Karin Månsdotter and if you walk a bit furtherin and turn back you can find the second biggest organs in Finland only the one’s in Lapua Cathedral are bigger. Not to forget that tasting the history and visiting the Cathedral is free of charge.
Great from the outside but nothing really much from the inside, still it stands glorious in the center of the most beautiful square of the city of Turku. It is really impressive and worth a visit. The entrance is free.
Besides the archipelago, the river Aura, Turku castle and the old Turku in Luostarinmäki this is one of the most essentilal sights in Turku. Very important historical and cultural significance in Finlands history.
