We spent a fantastic morning at this museum. The audio guide was really helpful. I can't say enough about how wonderful the staff were. They were friendly and knowledgeable. The exhibition about the toy boats is particularly worth seeing.
Arriving in Toulon on a Sunday with many things closed the Naval museum situated at the entrance to the Navy docks was a nice distraction from the Sunday market.Only a 500 metre walk from where ferries and cruise ships dock it is easy to find just turn left towards the grey ships of the French navy when leaving the dock side.9 euros for two to enter this place is not huge but very very interesting ,fantastic models of ships from every era, especially 1800-1900.Large oil paintings of Toulon harbour and battle scenes from years gone by could hang in any gallery. They also have an instrument panel from a decommissioned submarine which is staggering in size and looks very complex to use.An audio guide is available in many languages and is free, all in all a good way to escape the sun and heat for a couple of hours.
There are some very pretty paintings in the museum and some amazing models of ships. It is a good place to learn about the history of Toulon too, as Toulon's history has much to do with the navy.It is a very cheap price to go in and a headset is included in your admission fee.
An interesting museum showing the naval history of the town up to the modern day with audio guides available in English.
Even if, like my wife, you have no interest in naval history, this is worth visiting if only for the collection of views of old Toulon over the ages. For the naval history buff (guilty as charged; it was my special subject on Mastermind), it is probably the best place to go outside Greenwich or Portsmouth.
Small but well set up museum with good range of exhibits. There is a free audio tour that provides a clear commentary and whilst most of the exhibits only have French narrative with basic french you get a good feel of the history.
Lots to see; well laid out; English language audio guide; educational and entertaining for all age groups.
At the top of Mount Faron is this little museum about the battle that was fought in Toulon. It has the history, the men involved from several armies and a collection of pictures, war weapons and miniature replicas. There is a movie at the end of the museum.
Easily reached by walking along the harbourside from our cruise ship berth this was an enjoyable visit. My French is basic but the audio guide in English helped explain many of the exhibits. The history of Toulon is inextricably tied up with the naval base, and the models maps and some of the marvellous historic paintings show this well. There are some great models on display, I was particularly impressed by the wooden dry dock, the large scale fully rigged training ship models, and the aircraft carrier. The collection of naval toys was also interesting. There was a reduced entrance fee on presentation of my cruise boarding card.
There's a lot of maritime history to take in here. We met a lot of the locals passing through on our way to the marina and they were quite happy to tell us the history of Toulon and its surrounding areas. Impressive monuments to see!
