Do not hesitate to go around the gardens, it is free and you have a nice panorama. Their show did not appeal to us, we found it pricey too and there are already too many things to walk to.
The grounds here are so pretty. The chapel is lovely, The tour of the old hospital is interesting. Located nearby are Roman ruins that are a must stop while you are here.
The small town and the country-side is pretty,no wonder so many impressionists found inspiration here. This chateau too is actually quite beautiful. But it has been turned into a museum (NO ORIGINAL PAINTINGS though), they walk you through a designated route into a series of halls and auditoriums and explain via the audio guide what who and when of impressionists art and artists (Dummy's guide if you will). Most tourists find it pretty informative but if you ask me the multimedia tour goes overboard when you have Van Gogh and Monet's cartoons having conversations with each other.... a bit too much for my liking...and since we were part of a university group we basically paid not much but i think the etrance to the meuseum is quite steep as well...its a ten minute walk to the cemetry to visit Van Gogh's grave...
This is afternoon out from Paris, the multi media visit about the impressionists captures the feeling of paris at the beginning of the 20th century. There's a number of interesting sites nearby, such as the church painted by VIncent Van Gogh, as well as where he use to live.
Auvers sur Oise and the surrounding area is well worth a visit. The chateau is in a lovely setting, and has a slightly different and interesting Impressionist museum.Exploring the countryside around is also a worthwhile activity, and there is an very useful TopoGuide available with a range of walks of various difficulties. I also recommend the nearby villages of Champagne sur Oise and L'Isle D'Adam for a visit. Both places are easily accessible on the train, straight out of Gare du Nord in Paris.
I found this difficult to sum up, as its quite a magnificent building with nice gardens and an interesting show or exhibition. I was a little disappointed with several aspects, firstly you were limited to a small number of rooms in the Chateau and the exhibition was really more a story of events, with no original paintings. However, I did enjoy it and think that it give a good overview of impressionism. There is a good free car park, and fairly large picnic areas, with good views. Overall its a nice place to visit, not too sure on value as I think generally things in France can be more expensive than the UK.
Before you go visit you need to know that there are NO paintings in there. But that's not the point of the museum. It's an interactive museum of the most unusual quality. Some memorable parts of the museum: the train ride from Paris to Auvers. You get onto a simulated train as the Impressionists living in Paris would have done. You get the sights and sounds of being on that historical train ride. Fantastic, especially if your a freak for Impressionsism. For years I've been bringing my painting groups there and they've loved it. Another treat is the Van Gogh film with 3-D glasses. Those are my two faves. Auvers sur Oise is so special to me for one overriding reason: you get the feel that the town hasn't changed since the time of Van Gogh. There's more to that town than is in this review and if you want to know just ask. Last time there was about two years ago and I'm not given that choice by the tripadvisor site so I have to enter the oldest date possible -August 2011
If already know about the impressionism, then it would be quite boring. The exhibition is about the time when impressionism was first introduced.Too much sound effect and too much talking. The audio guide is quite impressive: auto activated by your location. but not worth 16euro.The garden and the building is pretty nice though.
We thoroughly enjoyed the multimedia presentation at the chateau, where we saw the development of the Impressionist era virtually come to life. It was so worth the price. We are eager to return!
