Doctor Gachet and his daughter are perhaps most famous for Vincent's role in memorializing them as well as their kindness towards him, and their home served as a haven for an impressive array of French artists beyond Van Gogh himself. His merits as a healer were less profound than his impressive fine eye for many great works yet unrecognized for their creativity in the latter stages of the nineteenth century. One gets a feel for Vincent and his fellow artisans as well as an intimate view of the everyday life of a country doctor at the time. Both inside and outside, the Gachet family home is a little jewel well worth a visit. The experience balances nicely the role of educational small museum allowing an insightful reflection upon an intimate bit of cultural history.
Lovely old house was free to go in. Could well imagine van gogh visiting and painting in the garden. Is a little bit on the edge of the village but worth the walk!
Dr Gachet's house is a nice hideaway almost outside the village with beautiful gardens and a small exposition inside the house. It's really charming.
with its connection to Van Gogh this is an interesting small house to visit if you are in Auvers for the day. We went in whilst following the walk round town seeing where all the well known pictures were painted and it costs very little so worth the detour. Nice small garden too
You can walk where Van Gogh walked, where he painted and where he was treated for his demons homeopathically by this doctor with a lot of business sense and terrific foresight in that he accepted paintings in lieu of money for treatments not only of Van Gogh, but of other Impressionists as well. His son donated the collection to the French state and you can see them today in Paris museums. His garden is beautiful and the house shows how a country doctor lived 125 years ago.
