The most important aspect of the history of north east Pennsylvania is the industry of anthracite coal mining. The peak years for this coal mining, which fueled a good part of America's industrial revolution was the 1850's through the 1920's. It is a fascinating chapter in American HistoryWhile a visitor can tour actual coal mines in Lansford, Ashland, and Scranton ... Eckley Miner's Village is all about the lives and struggles of coal miners, their families, and their communities. This is a genuine authentic mining company "Patch Town" that somehow survived since before the Civil War. I like to think of Eckley as 'the working man's colonial Williamsburg.' It is a living history museum that interprets the lives of coal mining communities. This is a history all Americans should know about ... exploitation, injustice, labor strife, danger, survival were part of the picture.Having visited Eckley at least 3 times I recommend it. There's a great little museum in there. Be sure to go on a weekend when costumed characters are around to make the history come alive.
Thank you for your visit. Our programs are very important to our mission and we are so happy you enjoyed yourself. We like the Lavender Express too.
Thank you for your visit and review. It is rewarding for our staff and volunteers to hear about a enjoyable visit. We are open 355 days each year but closed on fall, winter, and spring holidays. The gift shop is open every day through the summer and has limited hours through the early fall, then weekend only from November through mid December. It is closed then until spring, but we carry gift shop items in our museum lobby and can make special arrangements for visitors.
Thank you for your visit and review. Our volunteers work very hard to enliven our once bustling village and we're glad you enjoyed your time here. While Colonial Williamsburg does an excellent job and in many ways sets the standards for historic villages, I like to think that we represent much broader picture of the United States that is more visible across the country today. I hope we see you again soon.
Thank you for your visit and review. I'm glad you enjoyed your time here. The Stockton mine disaster site is a good reminder of some the very dangers that plagued coal miners and families living in the region. If you liked taking photos, why not check out our fall foliage photo contest running through November.
Thank you for your visit and your review. It is important for us to be able to show just what it was like to live in a patchtown and try to carve out a life in such difficult conditions. We will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the museum next year and hope to see you again.
Thank you for visiting Eckley. We're glad to see repeat visitors and very pleased you enjoyed your tour. I will be happy to pass on the review of your early October tour to the guide on duty that day. They welcome feedback of all kinds. If you're local you may want to consider coming out to one of our events. The next, Christmas at Eckley, will take place on December 13th and 14th.
Thank you for your review. Eckley is a special place, but historically not an uncommon find in this part of the country especially as we were industrializing. I hope to see you at Eckley again soon.
I'm glad to hear that both you and your granddaughter enjoy our programs. Thank you for visiting and reviewing our site. We are working on our Christmas program right now and hope to see a large crowd this year. We're changing things just a bit this season but will still have a Victorian tea, children's crafts, entertainment, and a visit from the man in red himself.
Thank you for your visit and comments. It is amazing how many people have such fond memories of growing up in the area and having a role in the film. We owe the production a lot for the restoration of the village and the notoriety it gave. I hope you visit us again during one of our summer programs.
