This museum is in the old city hall, which moved in 1971. The building is made of stone and looks sort of like a castle, which is what got me there to begin with. Inside you learn of the history of Fort Wayne, from an actual Fort to a canal town, rail town, and then a city for manufacturing. The exhibits are good other highlights include the jail in the basement and the council chambers on the top floor.
Located in the old city hall, you can see all kinds of exhibts, they are rotated to keek it fresh. Don't forget to see the old lock up in the basement, check out the cells nothing has changed.
My 3year old son and I went recently. It was neat to see the old jail in the basement. My son also enjoyed the small section about trains.
I had no idea Ft. Wayne could claim so many industrial innovations. including tellevision, Webcor recorders, music industry mixing, plus their railroading history. About 1 hour to 90 minutes.
Nice little history center. I really liked seeing the old jail in the Basement. Not very big, but it is the actual jail that was used into the 1970's. The building was the old City Hall, great building to see. This was my first visit to Fort Wayne. I was only in Fort Wayne for the weekend and this center gave me a good feel for Fort Wayne, it's industyr, it's history. I'm so glad I stopped in.
We love learning about local history and the history museum is a nice and inexpensive family place to go. The best part is the jail in the basement. Downsides are that exhibits never ever change.
Beautiful old restored building with many different types of displays of Fort Wayne and Allen County history. Check out the former judges chambers... a beautiful room for events. They hold the Festival of Gingerbread in this area.Three floors of exhibits. Has an elevator for first and second floor. The old jail is in the basement... in the same condition as it was back in the 1970s when it was closed. It's creepy! There is a gift shop with unique items for sale as well as books, postcards, etc.I recommend taking an hour or two. My 8-year old loves this museum, and so do I.
I finally took my Grandaughter yo this great museum. I certainly have missed this one all these years. Does a wonderful job of telling the history of our great city, wish I had gone much sooner!!
Fort Wayne's History Center is a place for everyone. I include several contradictory and unconventional groups: Kids and adults; natives and tourists, men and women.Firstly, all Fort Wayne natives should go, because one should know the history of one's own city. Secondly, all visitors should go, as history of other places is also illuminating.Highlights include:-History of women in FW (especially with the All-American Girls Baseball League, in which FW had a team)-History of Latinos in FW-An old dollhouse, from the 1880s, that was given to little girls. They grew up, and donated it to the museum.-The building used to be the courthouse. So the jail, in the basement, is also a highlight,-December brings the Gingerbread Festival!Enjoy, and read the captions!
This restored building is home to a lot of things showing the past of Fort Wayne and Allen County. To really take in what the History Center has to offer, you may want to plan spending a couple of hours there. It is three floors of different displays telling the history of the city, with the first and second floors accessible via an elevator. The old jail is in the basement and looked just how it was at its closing in the 1970s. You may also want to take a look at the erstwhile chambers for judges.
