If you have time to kill just drop by here. I visit here at end July with hot sun. A small temple Tengu & the forests trail only. There is a café for you to eat some ice-cream & light meal only.
Bought the bus and rope way combined ticket from the bus terminal outside JR Otaru station. The view of the Otaru Bay was great !Should have gone in sunset time to see the night view! The facilities up there are a bit old, I have been there more that 20 years ago an it seems that not much upgraded have been done.
We took tour bus up to the mountain, there is a Robeway to bring up. We enjoyed the trip and we were lucky, we reach there just before sunset and we get to see the sky turn from orange, reddish, purplish and darkness. But you need to watch timing to ensure that you catch the bus back to JR Otaru station.
We went up there at night because we saw the brochures with pictures of the city at night. Unfortunately, the snow was falling heavily when we were in the gondola. When we were up there, there wasn't much to do except for a small ski museum and a restaurant that had nobody. We played a bit of snow for 10 minutes outside and took the gondola back. The good news is that its not far from the city so travel isn't that bad.
On a clear day the view over Otaru is terrific. Skiers will love the slopes and for those not up to the slopes there is a good place for sledging near to the lower cable car station.
Mt. Tengu can be easily accessed by bus (¥220 one way), followed by ropeway (¥1140). You can also get seasonal ticket if you make multiple use of the ropeway, eg. people who ski at the mountain. It's interesting to see the whole city being lit up after night fall. Do go up to the mountain before it gets dark and observe the city being slowly lighted up at dusk. There's a observatory desk where you can take nice photos. The only restaurant at Mt Tengu serves pretty good curry cutlet (¥950). If you are afraid of the cold, you can order some food or drink and enjoy the beautiful view from the restaurant. Do take note of the last ropeway departure time or you may get stranded.
go up before sunset, and wait!you will be greatly surprised how beautiful it will become ^_^Mt. Tengu is much quieter and serene, compared to Mt. Hakodate, and a lot less crowded.it drizzled a little before we went up, which dampened our moods a bit.but we saw double rainbow in the end! watch the changing colours of the skies during sunset, to dark. breath-taking!
Our tour guide brought us to Mt Tengu during our visit, assuring us that it was one of the best tourist attractions at Otaru. The trip to the summit is a rather relaxing one; all you have to do is take the ropeway all the way up to the top. True to its namesake, you’ll find the mask of a Tengu (means “heavenly dog”) just outside the ropeway centre. Our time at the summit was limited, so we pretty much stuck around the vicinity of the ropeway centre. The view from the summit is rather impressive, though it was a little marred by a thin fog that has started to form in the horizon. Surprisingly, for a well-known tourist destination, the place wasn’t filled with that many tourists. I think that families with kids will enjoy going into the enclosure just outside the ropeway centre, where they can feed the squirrels roaming about in the enclosure.
We went up the mountain top by a ropeway . There is a chipmunk park!!! They are very small, cute and nimble. They're timid, but come out of their nest and eat the sunflower seeds from our palms. So pretty. We enjoyed the grass bobsled. We can change the speed of it. So much fun! There is a small museum about a ski jump competition.Very beautiful scenery. We were satisfied very much.
