Such a unique place where you can get personal with the current active volcano and see its paths of destruction top to bottom in a matter of a few hours. No other place like it.
There is so much to see and do here! The visitors center should be your first stop as the rangers are very knowledgeable and will help you decide how to make the best use of the time you have. There are short, easy trails if you're not a serious hiker. The Thurston Lava tube is a cool sight and an easy walk. Don't wear flip flops tho, especially if it's raining as the start of the trail can be slick. Also, a must see is the view of Kilauea from the Halema'uma'u viewpoint behind the Jaggar museum. It is best after dark, at least 15 min or so after sunset. The famous red glow is just beautiful! If you're doing the chain of craters road, you will be able to see the petroglyphs and the holei sea arch. Both pretty cool sights. The petroglyphs are neat and the trail to get to them isn't too long. The holei sea arch is even easier to get to. It is right off the road.
Love this area! This area is so diverse in its surroundings from desert to rain forest. We did a hike into the Kilauea Iki Crater. This volcano last erupted in 1959. This is a beautiful hike through the rain forest along the rim listening to the birds singing down deep onto what was once a lake of flowing lava. When you look down onto the crater floor from the rim the hikers below look like tiny ants. The trail is well marked with Aha (stacked rocks) across the crater floor. Amazing enough new vegetation is starting to grow among the molten rock in cracks from seeds that have been blown in by the wind. There are also many steam vents scattered along the trail. After our hike we walked through the Thurston Lava tube before taking a drive down the Chain of Craters road to the coast line. We the went back and waited until dark so we could see the glow from the Kilauea Caldera. Last year we missed out on this because it started to pour rain. This year we had a beautiful show! Very cool day.
This is a must see as the views are spectacular. The size of the crater and walking through the lava tubes was breath taking. The tour we took was 11 hours long and worth every minute. We had a supplied lunch which consisted of a sandwich, beverage, chips, and desert all of which were very good. Dinner was also included and we ate at the resort in the park and the food was awesome. Our driver and guide Jon was also fantastic and made the trip that much more enjoyable. We visited points of interest along the way to the volcano which made the trip that much more enjoyable.
We've just come back from a day at volcanos national park and I wish we had another day to spend there. We were at the park for 7 hours and it wasn't enough. We stopped at nearly every senic point and went to the lava tubes twice because it was so nice. We're not avid hikers by any means but we did a few of the smaller easy hikes and very much enjoyed them. Be sure to pack warm clothes. It was very windy and got really cold towards the top of the mountain. So much to see! Must visit the visitor centre first and speak to one of the Rangers and get all the flyers, they'll help navigate the day. Had a wonderful day and wish I could go back tomorrow Also $10 for a week pass per car. So cheap
This is a "must see" during the day and night. Be prepared for cold and rain! The rangers are helpful and knowledgeable. You can't imagine how beautiful it is as well as how massive it is! We are sure ri visit again!
Self drive trip to the volcano nationl park in the late afternoon. Fantastic views of the volcano which became amazing whan it got dark. The glow from the volcano crater can only be seen at night.
A must see from Jagger Museum, who can say they saw an active volcano!! The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. This was our second visit and had to bring daughter and husband. Still rainy and cold this trip too but the views are incredible!
