Lots of Russian history here. The exhibits have been done with great thought and are laid out nicely. We actually spent more time here than originally planned. Rangers here are friendly.
Interesting walk through with rooms preserved and furniture etc displayed as it would have been originally with lots of pictures and signs to read about the history. All added to the interest of Sitka as a cruise port. The other ports were so touristy this one was a welcome change.
Located on one of the main streets in Sitka (and walking distance from the cruise port), the Russian Bishop's House gives visitors an inside look into the history of the area. To tour the bottom floor of the house is free, but there is a small fee to go upstairs where it is set up as a house from the 1800s. We only toured the downstairs. There are various artifacts from the time period when Russia still controlled the area. They also offer a video about the history of the time. Informative if you have the time to go.
but you can miss it. It gives a bit of history of the place and has cut away walls so you can see how things were built back then.
Close to the one traffic light is the Russian Bishop's house. The first floor is a free museum. The upper floor costs money. I wasn't a fan of how the museum video presented the Tlingit/Russian relationship. There was a passage that was, to wit: Boy it's a great thing we Russians brought that small pox plague that killed 50% of the Tlingit. It made them so much easier to convert after we killed half of them." Gag me.
Bit of a history fan and very interesting innovations for heating. Guide spoke clearly and slowly so we heard every bit of info.
This is great museum for understanding the history of the Russian presence in Sitka. The chapel was particularly beautiful.
HI. it is interesting and old, not many artifacts in it but each room has some explanation and pictures and other things. if you are in town check it out, its free.
This would have received a "4" except for the excellent tour guide from Parks who was incredibly knowledgeable about not only the Russian Bishop's House but all the history from that time period. It was a fascinating place to visit and definitely an important part of the history from this region.
A real education of the Russian history of Sitka. Be sure and take the guided tour. So much history. Don't forget to pet the sea otter pelt :-)
