I loved allot about this museum, I really enjoyed to see the traditional clothes and farming tools, then there are strange very thought provoking "things" that turn up at some of the displays, will not say, you just have to visit yourself! go!
A very famous museum in Athens, which we were so looking forward to visiting, turned out to be a big disappointing surprise.First of all, it's very pretentious – its design, the attitude of the staff and the entire atmosphere it creates.Having said that, the permanent collection is lovely (yet not extraordinary) and includes statues, paintings, busts, archeological artifacts and more. The exhibition is spread over several floors, with similar themes not being grouped together on a specific floor, which makes taking a chronological tour nearly impossible.Ticket is 7 Euros, but we planned to visit on a Thursday, when tickets are free and the museum is open until midnight.Try to visit the museum on a Thursday. Crowds disappear in the late afternoon and you could have a peaceful 60-90 minutes free visit. Otherwise, this overrated museum is not worth the 7 Euros ticket price.
This museum has lots of items representing traditional folklore. I think anyone interested in the history of cultural Greece this is a must see.
We arrived on a day when entry was free, there are 3 floors well laid out in what was a private home. Items ranging from sculpture, paintings, jewellery, clothes and musical instruments. The top floor has a nice cafe to rest up in afterwards.
There was a lot to see in the Benaki Museum. The displays are numbered and there are explanations in English and Greek for everything. Even though I've been in quite a few Mediterranean antiquities museums, there were still some new things to see. For example, a tiny erotic figure on one of the pots stopped me dead in my tracks, it was kind of funny to see that. Since it was Thursday, the visit was free, a nice surprise that I hadn't expected.
The restaurant at the BENAKI is open every day for lunch until 4 PM and evenings on Thursday and Saturday The Lavraki is excellent and so is the desert and esspresso. Be ready to have dinner a little later, as the portions are small
Cited in the Parliament area of the city I thought the museum was only for show....more people in the restaurant than in the viewing galleries....
Not my favourite museum in Athens. Nice and interesting, but I would have expected a better collection of paintings!
the first and teh last floor were worderfull. The fisrt for the historical presentation: from mineaecan period to the bysantium one. the last for the view from the terrace, even if it was noisy. I wonder about the restaurant. it would have been nice to have had dinner there...
This museum is one of the best curated museums I've ever visited. It is beautifully presented and if you are a museum buff this one is not to be missed. This is the sort of place you can easily spend 1 - 4 hours exploring depending on how much of the collection you want to see; the collection is extensive. We went mid day and though the museum was busy it was still very easy to work ones way through without delays.
