We had two walks round St Leu - the first one was disappointing but on the second one we went round the back way which is very quaint and pretty, and it's pleasant finding the bars and restaurants overlooking the little canal.
We took the Office of Tourism's tour through St Leu and although we think the area is lovely, it is presently in a very sad state, especially at the northern part of the tour. Hopefully the mayor of Amiens will allow funds to help to revive it - there is such character here! We got off the 'track' at one point at the start and found ourselves between canals and buildings mired in mounds of dog schitt, furniture thrown out of windows and some really UGLY stuff, in very bad need of some good tenants. If I were on the Bureau de Tourisme's board, I would definitely change the route to show better parts of St Leu. It is a real pity to see hundreds of used plastic containers floating in the canal near the Maison de Vinaigre and that it is in such bad state of repairs (undergoing renovation? mmmm?). This area has such possibilities and a desperate need of money to revive it! Please, Amiens, don't let it go away - it is worth revival!
The St.Leu area is quite diverse beginning with the shops and cafés along rue Vanmarcke which are obviously serving the thriving student population. Crossing over the bridge towards Quai Bélu one finds the touristy area comprising several bars/restaurants (but usually open on Sundays which is a bonus). Have eaten in some of these restaurants and they are not that expensive. Walking along the canal there are many examples of quaint and picturesque architecture, but walk further away from the canal and the buildings soon deteriorate into shabby chic – rather derelict and run down buildings (rue des Clairons/rue Blanquetaque). Some of the older parts of St.Leu are quite reminiscent of the canal streets in Brugges. An interesting, lively and quite photogenic part of Amiens and a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
Outside seating areas to sit and eat and drink and take in the views. I always use it. I like to spend pleasurable evenings eating French cuisine. I have no dislikes
Good to stroll around on a sunny day otherwise when poor weather not much going on . Good place to take photographs and watch the world go by . Not far from the busy me of centre ville .
Very friendly and busy restaurant, lots of large pork on the menu, really difficult to chose. Desserts were good as well, would have liked to tried more.
Many shops with a variety of goods. A good Subway shop for a snack in the middle of old town. On holidays everything is closed. You have to park outside the old town and walk the streets.
The St-Leu area has beautiful views and many restaurants. There is a parking lot across the canal in a paid lot.
Beautiful spot by the river, nice restaurants, buildings, park either just to wander or to stop at a bar and soak up the ambience. Look out for the car obviously placed in the river near the statue, a students prank I think.
