Loved this rock - SO many steps, so great for the legs, but this little trip will give you a great sense of adventure! We got about 1 metre from the top! I slightly chickened out of really going for it as I was worried I would not be able to get back down! but had such good fun figuring out which route to take and we sat on a rock outlooking the sea and watched the sunset!Awesome time! I love Santorini!
Found this place while hiking through Firas. Beautiful views of the sea and Fira from here . Was quite windy the day I visited so didn't get to see other side of the rock but amazing views.
It is worth going. Tons of steps down, so going is not that bad, but coming back up is certainly a trek, but very doable. We got a bit lost going through town to find the stairway down to the Rock, but we eventually made it. We didn't head down to the chapel, but the view from the top is very nice. It's certainly a different view of Santorini and it is definitely not commercialized. Watch your step, but not a difficult hike. As far as the last few metres, it is doable with some common sense. Obviously watch your step and ideally have proper footwear. A previous review said that when you think you have gotten to the end, look right and you will see some foot holds in the rocks for you to climb up. It's only about 3-5 metres to the top. Not bad at all. Once you get to the top, it is flat. Becareful coming down, it may be a good idea for someone to stay behind to spot the person coming down and take turns going up.
While in Santorini, must visit Skaros - It is a rock with amazing views. A place to get a lot of photos
The views from the Rock are great. We did this on our last day at the island and staring at it for 3 days, I really wanted to get to the top since it looked like a cool spot to see the island and surrounding area from. However, once you hike up to the main part of the rock, the only way to get to the top of the rock is by hiking UP. at this point, you are basically inside a rock, and you have to use proper footing on the side of the rocks to pull yourself up. Needless to say, we didn't do it but some were able to. Even to walk around the rock to get to that entry point can be a bit 'dangerous' as there's nothing you can hold on to in case if you slip. However, it's still worth walking over to for the great views.
Its further than it looks! But if a young girl in her wedding dress can do it so can most people! It isn't signposted so you might not find the path too easily though you will adore the views when you get there. The top of the rock requires some climbing so very few actually go there.
There are no extra signs of the hiking trail. But it is not difficult to find the way if you are on hiking path from Fira to Imerovigli. The path is not extra secured and it is made from two ways. First path leads to the back of the rock to a small but beautiful church with stunning view from there. This is suitable for almost everybody. The second path in going around the rock and to to top. Near the top you must climb a few meters of rock, It is not impossible if you have at least some hiking or mountain experience. The reward, the view from the top is unbelievable. This is also the best position to watch the sunset. So you can find something for all tastes here. There are no facilities on the way, so it is advisable to bring a small bottle of water with you.I added some pics from our trip to Skaros.
We stayed in an amazing suite on the cliff near the Skaros Rock. We decided late one afternoon to climb the rock. It was a workout because we first walked down from the cliff we were on, then up the rock, and then down the other side! When we got to the peak, we saw a beautiful, white chapel at the base of the other side. So cool! Then we walked down to the chapel. Of course, we then did the reverse walk back to our suite. It was a cool, breezy afternoon so we had great weather for the long trek. It was pleasant and the view of the cliff we were staying was worth the walk. There are no safety cables to keep you from falling. My husband stood on the edge holding to a thin piece of wire that once gave a little to protect. We laughed at how the US has everything overly protected due to crazy lawsuits. Here - an adventurer can really enjoy skill and freedom!
That you could see Santorini from a different vantage point. Great views and setting. Good for some wine at sunset but bring with you a flashlight for walking back at night
Once you find the path, its a trek down a steep and in places broken flight of steps. The rock itself is covered in ruins and the summit is only accessible with rock climbing skills.Take strong shoes, water and be good with heights if you want to visit here, but you will be rewarded with a fabulous view of the caldera.
