A visit to the Courthouse Complex should be on the itinerary of any visitor to York. It has been very well preserved with excellent interpretation panels throughout.
With free entry on 21 28 April and 8 and 12 May 2013, it is the perfect time to visit this historical attraction. Beautifully restored and maintained, this complex documents and provides insight into York's criminal history. Visitors have recently advised of "orbs" appearing in their photos! Drop in for a visit, you never know who you might "meet".Entertaining historical family attraction situated in the main street of York (next to the Post Office)
Very impressive. Great look at yesteryear and the way our legal system worked. The buildings and grounds were well maintained and presented.
It was really interesting going through this complex. Taking of photos. As I like old buildings & was interested the design of these old buildings. Plus the history of the goal & the court house.
The photos tell the story... Indigenous Aussies were chained and pressed into hard labor to build York's infrastructure.
Great old courthouse complex that has been restored, great to see what things were like a long time ago and also how they treated the aboriginal people in those days. If you visit the beautiful little town of York, take the time to go and have a look around.
I had never been here before but thought it was great. hidden from the road you can view the court house and galley from upstairs for free but the best part is out the back. This includes the prison cells and stables. You can go inside the tiny cells and feel the ball and chains and neck locks, its a little scary!
right at the entrance a nice Lady took our attention. She charged a little dollar but did an outstanding presentation of the history of the courthouse and the attached police station. We watched the video, went to every single part of the complex and were told of judging at old times and the historical background of York! Finally we made sure that non of our family had been taken to court at York at early times!
We have enjoyed our visit to the Courthouse with it's gaol and stables, not very big but part of York's history.
The old lock-up and two court rooms from different eras have been superbly preserved to evoke a strong understanding of life for the people involved at the time the complex was operational.
