Wonerful place to ride a bike. There is a chance to meet a big hog on the way to horse theater. But don't be afraid, they won't attack you.
An island of Hortitsa is an unique place.Unique not only because it is the cradle of Ukrainian art and history but also for its beauty. The island is a protected area with many parks and natural monuments. Here is a Museum of the Cossacks and the equestrian theatre. amazing beautiful landscapes attract tourists from all over the world.I invite all guests to visit the island definitely guarantee that you will not regret.
This is a beautiful island with wonderful nature and great views! If you visit Zaporozhye you must go there for sure! Go to the Horse theater!!! They have a very unique Kazaks show over there!
I visited the history museum on the island. I went with my fiance as she is a teacher and she takes her students there. I enjoyed it very much. I would have enjoyed it a bit more if it was not bitter cold when we went. I know I will be back on my next trip. I am sure the area around it will look beautiful with the trees and plants in bloom. It had a very nice view of the lake and the city. I found the history museum interesting and I did learn quite a bit about the history of Zaporozhye. The museum is small when compared the museums in the US I have been to but I enjoyed it nevertheless. A few km down the road is the very nice resort/restaurant Panska Hata where we had dinner and nice but cold walk around the resort barn, petted the horses and looked at the places guests could stay at.I am looking forward to seeing the island again in the summer time weather. The taxi ride from the Intourist Hotel to the Cossack museum on the island took about 20 minutes.
This is one of the largest islands in Europe that is located in a river. The Cossacks once had their headquarters on this island, and there is now a replica of a Cossack village that travelers can visit. The village is very interesting, especially during times when Ukrainians are dressed in national costumes and explain the crafts and way of life from many years ago. There are plenty of trails available for walking and picnicking is common. The city people love to go to the island to breathe the fresh air and to enjoy the beautiful nature.
There is no much to see. But if you are interested in finding out the Kozaks' way of living and feeling the atmosphere of that time, this is the right place to do it.
If you're in Zaporozhye, I guess you have to visit the Zaporozhye Cossacks on Hortitsa. Apparently the original Cossacks I'm told. the island itself is a bit of a lazy effort at a tourist destination and could be a lot better with some serious management. The Cossack show itself, while fairly original, is a pretty tired effort by long serving and just as tired performers. Hortitsa is worth a look, but you don't need to spend too much there.
This is actually a pretty broad description since the island is large and has more than one sight worth seeing (I believe all are worth your time!). Unfortunately I haven't seen it all. We've been to the museum, the Cossack Sich, a bit around the island paths and in the restaurant. The island itself doesn't have an entrance fee but the museum and Sich have.First of all, the view of the river Dnieper, the island itself, the dam and of the city with its hundreds of cooling towers and chimneys (and Lenin, of course) is amazing. The museum offers a view into local history and the historical importance of the Zaporozhian Cossack host along with the famous reply to Sultan Mehmed IV which is an amazing painting (alas not the original) by itself and I had to get a magnet for my fridge. Excellent dioramas both of the Cossacks and the WW 2 battles of Zaporozhye. The Cossack Sich is a place you MUST visit while in vicinity. It's a wooden fort/village built to represent the one destroyed by order of Catherine the Great. Inside you can see how the Cossacks lived, their weapons and even a few Cossack reenactors (actually descendants of the Cossacks) who have a show every hour? in which they demonstrate how to use their weapons. A lot of wooden souvenirs here. The restaurant offers traditional Ukrainian dishes and we went overboard. Service was nice and food was plenty and tasty. In the southern part of the island you have an excavation site of an XVIII century boat, Scythian burial mounds, Horse theater, flooded part of the island. Took a lot of nice photos and this remains one of my favorite Ukrainian spots. The contrast between this old peaceful island and the industrial, chimney packed Zaporozhye is astounding.
Visited this place in December 2011-The day after I got married. Even with a throbbing head and freezing temperatures it's worth a visit. Looking forward to return here in Summer 2014.
I liked the nature - plants and rocks, roads, museums, historical places, beaches, everything there is very beautiful. Better to have a guide for Hortitsa Island.
