The place is huge and has areas separated into commercial street, fishing village and so forth. It's very impressive as the buildings are almost all originals and hundreds of years old, they have been moved and maintained very well. There are also volunteers in some of the buildings that helps to explain the history, although most of them can only speak Japanese, however, we were lucky that one gentlemen in the Sake house could speak English and we had a good time learning about the traditional way of making sake and also drinking some, really good, especially as it was winter! There is also a cafeteria that serves really yummy food.Overall, a good experience even though it's quite a distance away. There are buses available but I drove.
The small architecture bundlings of the museum depict the olden days of How people led their lives in Hokkaido. From farm villages, to police stations or inn, each structure has a story to tell from their inside displays. One can easily spend the whole day there, unfortunately with young kids and snowy weather, we could only explore about 5 buildings which took us 3 hrs. Easy to get there from Sapporo. Take the JR to Shin-Sapporo, take the bus number 22 whose timing is approximately every 20min in the morning. Bus ride free for kids and adults only about 210¥. However the shuttle bus ride for backward journey is every hourly departing at 1:40pm, 2:40 and 340pm so be sure to plan your schedule.
We took train & change bus to get there. Very scenic place. Good to spend a whole day exploring the old town. Different houses with history background. Don't bother to take the horse cart ride, very short & u wont get to touch the horse. Just relax & enjoy the nature. Would come back again if there is a chance.
Not worth it if you cant read japanese. English handout explains the function of each building, but not any of the things inside, which are the most interesting.
