Easy to get to from downtown Juneau it takes you by tram to Mt Roberts where you can sit on a bench and enjoy the views. You can stay 10 minutes or for hours hiking the trails. They have a restaraunt where sometimes you can see a bear wandering outside. A nice place to take a break.
Tram takes you up from the cruise ship docks, above the tree line (1800) feet into the "alpine". There are miles of trails to hike, And, also at the top of the tram is the visitor center with restaurant, souvenir shop, movie theater showing fantastic short films on native culture and wildlife. The view below of Juneau, Gastineau Channel, the float planes, and the cruise ships is indescribable. Keep your eyes open for marmots, ptarmigan birds, eagles, and always be ready for the occasional bear.Nothing like looking down on a float plane that is landing or taking off. The further up you hike, the more of the "ice cap" and glaciers that become visible. There is also an Eagle Raptor section at the upper tram terminal that usually has an eagle, owl, or goshawk on display recovering from injuries.
It was about a five minute walk from our Princess cruise ship to the tramway. This was such a neat thing to do while in Juneau. Loved the view from up top. They had a nice little area up top also like nature trails, an eagle, and a gift shop. But I liked the views and the fun short ride up and down the best. A great place to get some good pictures also. We didn't think it was overpriced because we love doing this kind of thing.
Yes the tram ride is expensive & overpriced but you are in Alaska and everything here is expensive. This was my first stop after getting off the ship. There was no line and there were only 5 people in my tram so everyone had plenty of room to move from one side to the other to get pictures. The ticket is good all day so you can go up as many times as you like. It only takes about 5-7 minutes to get to the top. There is a restaraunt, gift shop, bathrooms, and a place to watch a short movie about the area. There are a lot of hiking trails with overlooks of harbor. The views are spectacular. I hiked for quite awhile and the trails are good and great views throughout the hike. This is highly recommended especially if you are a hiker
As majestic as the nature is in and around Juneau, its most important building, the flat-roofed, six-story state capitol, is anything but. The same can be said of the city if you’re hoping to find much more than souvenir and jewelry stores within walking distance of the dock. For the non-acrophobic, the Mount Roberts Tramway ($16-$32) is right there. A 1,800-foot ascent up the mountain takes six minutes, and the view alone removes any chance of this being called a tourist trap.
We were there on a rainy day so the views were not all that great and our long range views were limited by the clouds. We rode both ways and at $31 for the return trip we thought that it was expensive. When we got to the top all we could do is have a bit of a walk around and use up some time in the souvenir shop. The operator on the way back was entertaining - relating some stories and local legends while beating his drum.
Once at the top there is a good hiking trail with labels on various vegetation, a great teaching tool, if one is interested. Needless to say the view is awesome. We were there in June and still had quite a bit of snow in places.
Amazing view from the tram and upper station. Don't stop there, go out walking up the mountain while there and you get a even better view and nature experience.Bring hiking shoes and a bottle of water to drink, You'll need it.
We took the tram up to the museums. Very interesting. We went to see the movie that was in the theatre. Also, went to the store where there were two men working on a totem pole. It was interesting watching them carve the totem pole. They offered some very interesting history about their tribe and the totem pole history. This attraction should not be missed.
