I have never seen a play I didn't like at Barter, but this one almost got ruined for me because of the character Moonface Martin, really creepy, maybe it was intended to have the woman dressed like a man, but it really didn't appeal to me. And the actress really didn't even do a good job at the character. Everyone else in the play was excellent, but that one almost ruined it for me, and that character was on stage way too much for my liking.
We saw "The Road to Appomattox" at the Barter II, and it was a surprisingly well-done production. An unexpected treat following the show was a panel discussion by the playwright, the director, and a Civil War expert. Everything about the Barter seems to be first-rate. I highly recommend the experience for anyone visiting the area. You will want to buy your tickets in advance. Our play was sold out.
Had a great time with family. The performance started on time and had us laughing from beginning till the end. The performers were great and songs a delight. We try to come twice a year. Great job Barter Theater.
Everytime I attend a play at the Barter, I ask myself, why don't I come more often, but as a mother of 3 and business owner/operator, I realize that its just lack of time. I am from the East Coast and often went to Broadway plays, Barter holds a strong candle.
My 80-year old mother and I had a fabulous experience at the Barter Theater. The historic beauty of the building, the quality of the productions, and the enchanting box office attendant, Kate, made for a truly magical evening. We will definitely be back!
What a rare experience to come step back in time at the Barter Theater. Their history alone is well worth the visit, but don't miss the show, that's where the magic lives. Once the show begins you are immediately transported into another world. The acting paired with the theater sets is truly a treasure to see. Take an extra sweater ladies, they do keep it quite brisk inside.
Have been here many many times. Something for everyone. If you have younger children check out batter stage 2 they have plays made for kids, even though i love them. My favorite play was on the main stage a couple years ago when I saw Alice in Wonderland great play!
We love this theater, so this is more a review of the plays then the theater. We saw The Road to Appromattox at Stage 2. This is a great dramatic play, with history and comedy woven in - you'll learn something, I bet. We also saw Anything Goes at the Main Stage. This is the play for the musical Broadway lovers - there was dancing and singing, and yes, I left with the song running through my head and my feet tapping. The theater offers discount tickets the day of the show - subject to available seats. So, if you're willing to risk not getting a ticket, you can gamble on buying your tickets at the box office after 11 a.m. on the day of the performance. We bought tickets ahead for one show, and risked the walk-up tickets on the other one. There were lots of empty seats for both performances, but it was a snow-storm weekend.
We attended the johnny Cash tribute show and had a fantastic time. Great acting, great singing, and a great environment. There honestly isn't a bad seat in the house.
Recently went to see a A Modern Christmas Carol" show at the Barter. It was excellent. Well worth the money. The atmosphere is friendly and very helpful. The players are well trained and excellent professional actor/actresses. The play had a wonderful theme while including lots of musical Christmas songs.
