This is a designated scenic byway, and deservedly so! What a beautiful, leisurely drive from Rocky Mountain National Park to Central City and Denver. Stop at the marvelous Central City Opera during the summer for some outstanding music in a charming mining town!
Great drive in good weather, little questionable in snow. Beautiful views and nature with possible wild life sightings.
The road is lightly traveled, giving you ample opportunity to stop and admire some of the finest mountain views in Colorado!
It's a long road and you can go as long or short a drive. You feel as if you are part of the mountains. You get some magnificent views. Have driven it many times and never tire of it.
The scenery was breathtaking! Make sure you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle; driving that road after a fresh snow in a car is a little nerve racking!!
We have been driving this road for 50 years ! Vistas from valleys and high shelf roads. You can drive into Wild Basin, a dirt road, into the Rocky Mt. Nat. Park. (Cost to enter the park) Driving through small, simple villages, from the gold mining heyday of Colorado, are fun places to stop & shop. The villages will have public restrooms. There is a road off to a "ghost town" not a difficult drive. Driving places not over run by tourists! Driving along creeks, you can still "pan for gold", perhaps finding a few flakes. Getting over to Central City & Black Hawk, you will find casinos where the old towns have changed. Hotel where the "Unsinkable Molly Brown" had rooms. The Opera House is a historic jem of a building !
Of course during the busy seasons, traffic can be a bit heavy but it's still a great drive with plenty of pull offs and side roads to go exploring.
We took this beautiful route to Estes and the scenic highway did not disappoint. We did hit some heavy snow during our trek but it just made the drive more beautiful! You pass through a lot of great little towns, we hope to make the trek again so we can stop along the way.
Worth every bit of time in the car and out. Wonderful views around every turn no matter what the weather is like. We took the drive twice, once in cloud/snow/rain and then again on a sunny day. The kids where intrigued with all the wildlife as we got in and out of the car.
Make this drive. Period! It is one of the most scenic drives I have ever been on. This drive will give you a perfect view of all of what you would expect to see in Colorado. From interesting rock formations to pine and aspen covered mountains, I was in awe! The drive only took about 2 hours for us, but could've been much longer had we stopped every 10 minutes to take pictures. So many good spots to take pictures!
