The staff everywhere was friendly and it was clean, but it was too crowded to get at any tables. We didn't have much luck at the slots so we did not stay long. Make sure you go up top to the observation deck to see the view. They have free cokes and coffee but other drinks you have to pay for unlike at other casinos.
The "boat" needs to be taken out and sunk in the river as a fishing reef. Seriously, smoking in a casino in this day and age? Slots are tight. Table games are just carny games designed to seperate you from your money (high payouts look good, odds are poor). Table game minimums ae too high. Supposedly the State of Indiana is going to allow land-based gaming (isn't that what French Lick is already?) Hope so because this boat don't float!Restaurants are so-so. Cavanaugh's is over-rated. RiRa's is probably the best. Mama Mia's is another of a long line of failure restaurants in the same location. Boogie Nights "nightclub" is a thug hangout. Boat deli is a ripoff. Buffet in main hotel is closed (breakfast was ok but everything else sucked). Only breakfast at this time is at Max & Erma's.If you read the other review posts on this site it's pretty obvious which ones were posted by theur employees and marketing/management people. And we all know that marketing people do nothing but lie.Oh, and the comps that you get at the poker room $0.75/hr) are different than what you get at the table games and what you get at the slots. Slots pay out poorly but have better comps. You can only get your poker room comps at the poker room and the poker room won't redeem mailed out comps, you have to take them to the courtesy center, they validate them and then you take them to a floor person at a table game and they'll turn them into chips that you can then take to the poker room. The lower level is the emptiest floor and the poker room is the busiest area on that deck. Guess where the restrooms are on that deck? That's right - at the opposite end of the boat from the poker room!
From Gladys W.I really like Tropicana. I ride the bus from Nashville, TN. Recently some friends and I went to Metropolis -- food was good, but "machines were as tight at Dick's hat band" -- old saying! We won't be going back there any time soon! I enjoy the slots at Tropicana -- not nearly as tight at Harrahs in Metropolis, IL. I get free play in the mail from Tropicana and am planning on staying at the hotel soon as I hear there has been $7 million dollars spent renovating the rooms, etc. -- sounds exciting!!! I always enjoy Tropicana. I really like Max & Erma's -- sometimes my friends and I can sit by the window and see the great Ohio River -- food is great and so is the service! Also I don't believe most people smoke as much as they used to do at this casino or any casino we visit. My sister and I used to wear scarves around our neck to put over our noses if the smoke got too bad. We haven't done that in quite a while.Always a day packed full of fun and enjoyment -- wonderful mini vacation for me and my friends! Thanks for everything Tropicana -- hope to visit your great casino soon!!!
This place is the worst of the worst! I can honestly give this review because My wife and myself have been patrons of this casino for the last several years, on a weekly basis on Saturday nights. When it first opened it was called Casino Aztar, we had tried it once in the beginning and did not care much for it. At the time in Metropolis Illinois,we had been playing at Players casino, Merv Griffin owned it, GOD REST HIS SOUL... It was a GREAT PLACE.I tell all of you this because we have been Players in the area since casinos have come into our area that are drivable distance, not requiring an over night stay. Just trying to give you some back ground here folks. Now that we've established we're players now lets get on with my HONEST review of this casino Tropicana formerly casino Aztar. In 2007 I had told casino host employees that we would be patrons to only their casino, looking back that was a BIG MISTAKE. Players casino had sold to Harrah's in Metropolis Illinois, and it was ok until they banned smoking on the boat. Having the bad habit, and not wanting to leave a slot to go outside to have a smoke, not fun in cold weather, we went to Evansville, it was casino Aztar then.We never had any luck, other than breaking even, after hours and hours of play, it was fun for awhile, but it seemed they would never cut loose for us. We won a couple of times, small amounts, but after years up there, NEVER NOT ONCE A JACKPOT PERIOD did we win, remember there is two playing. Now I don't want to come off like we're high rollers because we're not, we played responsible and could afford too. Several hundred a weekend many times more. I got to know all the employees, and after years of breaking even or losing every Saturday night we went up there, I started to complain. That started last year, coming from a military background I went through the chain of command so to speak. The ones I spoke with we're sympathetic to my concerns, but more less their hands were tied. And they know longer have JOBS there, including the previous GM Ward Shaw. Then I called the corporate office and tried to speak to Mr. Tony Rodio CEO, only thing, you can only can leave a message, but I know they're heard, because I received call backs from Evansville. They gave me a song a dance as always, and said your luck will change. LOLThat must have been infuriating to them that I would take that step, but as an old Airborne Soldier I wanted to get their Attention. And I DID. On Saturday November 1st 2014 I went in loaded my comp play in to one progressive slot and popped it off, by the way I only hit the Max play button. That night I was ready for action, went to the bar proceeded to knock back my favorite double Jack with a splash of water and glass on the side. After many, shamefully I don't know how many, my wife came to the bar and was ready to eat.So we were on our way of of the casino when one of the big wig employees walked in front of me, and I told him to get the blank out of my way... MY BAD.. It's OK it was time to go, and long over due.So we had walked to Mama Mia's to have some dinner, and here comes the Calvary four of them, casino security, long story short I was asked to leave, and while leaving I was giving them my pent up frustrations all the way out the door.I could go on and on about this casino, and what I've observed there. They do have some good things going for them, and I've told them this. Their restaurants are not bad, and they have good entertainment in the Hoosier lounge on weekends. If your into that, we went to play period. For consistent Players if I can leave you anything here, it would be to watch out for signs of what we've experienced over the last several years their. I knew going in that Aztar was rated very badly, hence the re-branding under the corporate name Tropicana, and in my opinion it has become worse. They have resorted to giving away pots and pans luggage and other cheap junk to bring in traffic, I told my wife I find it hilarious, because you see many come in and get it and take it right out the door immediately, and we all know who's paying for that huh? I know we should have hit the door much sooner, but we like to get out of town on the weekends, and have a little fun. Truly I can tell you this, as far a winning we'd been better off to just have stayed at home and played scratch offs in our state lottery, seriously. To sum up this review if you go up there, keep your mouth shut, and when you hear them announce over their PA systems “WILL YOU BE OUR NEXT LUCKY WINNER” Keep your fingers crossed.PS. Their is a good ending kind of, Harrah's casino in Metropolis Illinois, our previous place is coming off the water and is opening up it's new digs on November 19th 2014. We were up their this past Saturday November 8th. And you know what, my wife hit pretty good. So goes the gambling. Also over the years we patronized Aztar, ie. Tropicana never, ever did a host call us for anything.Harrah's DID.TIGHT VERY TIGHT SLOTS PERIOD.. HOPE THIS HELPS... those that might become regulars.
Everything was good until we reached the actual casino and were overwhelmed by how smoky it is in there. I understand that as a casino you have to cater to the patrons but it was tough to spend a long amount of time in there with so much smoke in the air.Things really took a turn for the worst when we started playing Blackjack. Our dealer was an older gentleman named Jamie and he was unfriendly and grumpy the entire time we played. It really but a damper on the experience and it took everything I had not to confront him about his attitude. This is the first casino that I've been to and I hope that all of them are not as dirty, smoky, and unfriendly as this one.
Fun riverboat casino atmosphere. A decent amount of slots, but the table games are a bit limited, depending on your preference (my fiancee likes roulette and there are only 2 tables). The first floor is non-smoking but it still smells like smoke. The dealers are not overly friendly in general, but we did find a few exceptions. Fun place and we'll be back, but we hope the whole place will be non-smoking soon!
Smoke, smoke and more smoke. One non- smoking floor that the broken elevator did't go to, so walk the tight sheep stairs and smoke could still be smelled. Tight slot machines, minimum table games and did I mention smoke, no give-aways, no excitement as casinos usually provide. I know the scheme behind casinos and I know losing is part of it but I want to have a chance to win and at least want to have fun, if I must lose. The buffet was horrible, the prime rib theme was o.k. but have prime rib. We had to wait 15 minutes for prime rib and when I went back for seconds, again, no prime rib. This casino is joke and if your smart you will avoid this smoky, money trip.
This is probably the dirtiest casino we've been to. Comparing to Vegas it's like the old downtown casinos only not as clean and nice. It's also the second out of probably 30 casinos we've been to that charges for drinks. Not that we expected to win, because very few of our friends have there, but we left after about 40 minutes of coughing thru the three levels. Save your money and time.
I have been in many casinos. I will not repeat this. The smoking in the casino was a complete thumbs down. Black Jack was only in the smoking area. The non-smoking area was at the bottom floor of the casino. You literally had to travel through 2 smoke filled floors to reach the non smoking area. Hmm, wonder why the non smoking area smelled like it smoking was permitted. Hey Evansville-wake up. It's 2014! I'll take my money to another state!
While the casino can be a fun place to hang out, I can't believe with all of the evidence about the hazards of second hand smoke that this place would even allow people to smoke indoors. One only has to be in there 15 minutes to come out congested and smelling like a dirty ashtray. In addition, the employee who cashed out my tickets, though friendly, coughed on her hand and then touched my money. I guess I can't blame her for coughing since she works in that toxic dump. Please come into this decade and ban smoking at the casino.
