The museum is great, if you are into space stuff. The theater, however, is horrible! The screen needs updated and the cost to see a short movie is ridiculous.
There is only one space museum, it's just listed two different ways on tripadvisor. Not sure why. This is an okay place to stop for a quick tour of an hour or so. Nothing to recommend. Found it old and lacking, mildly interesting.
The i-max show on caves was great. The space museum was well-done, but some of it takes knowing the science behind the exhibits and is beyond the casual visitors' knowledge.
The flow didn't work, framed photos were in an indecipherable order, faded and not to date for those who have passed away. Really, no color printer is available? There was lots of empty space. Under construction. Why don't the ramps go to the first level? Gift shop was boring and old. No presence of docents. Ticket window person was nice. Sad reflection on important history that looked to the future. Felt like we stepped into a time warp 20 years ago. Worst stop of approx ten in New Mexico this trip. But there isn't much else to do inside in Alamogordo. Outside exhibit was fine.
I visited the NM Museum of Space History on a weekday, getting there an hour before their closing time of 5PM. There were only 3 other people in the museum so one hour was sufficient to see all of the exhibits. Note that I did skip the floor that had activities for children, so visitors with kids should allocate more time.I really appreciated seeing "artifacts" from the early days of the "Space Race" since I lived during that era. The floor layout is interesting as they use ramps rather than stairs to allow you to move from floor to floor starting at the top.One exhibit was entitled "The Shame of Rocketry" which listed some of the lesser known downsides of space history. There is also a park just outside the museum with remnants of a V2 rocket and John Strapp's rocket sled. Also an astronaut memorial garden and the burial site of the first "Astochimp" near the flagpoles.I was disappointed that the gift shop closed 5 minutes before the official closing time of 5 PM.
Funky quirky museum - has a kind of 80's retro feel to it, which is fun! The Daisy Track exhibit and the outdoor exhibits are really cool, the museum itself is pretty interesting, and it's just a neat place to visit. We really enjoyed it!
While in Alamogordo my wife and I took our kids to see this museum. The kids had a great time looking at all of the safe stuff but really liked getting to dress u as an astronaut. The museum has some very interesting artifacts which span from the very beginning of rocketry and space exploration till today. It was pretty inexpensive and was an enjoyable and informative way to spend a few hours.
Visited in April 2012, my old account disappeared... This is a very nice place to visit during the week when there isn't a crowd. We enjoyed the entire museum with just a few other people around. Make sure to visit the theatre!
Going to the space center is one of the most interesting places to go. If you are interested in the history of space and space flight this is the place to see. They have many interactive displays for children and adults
This museum packs a huge amount of space history into a small package. The interior main building chronicles early space flight experiments. Outside the facility, many game changing rockets and prototypes have been retired and are on view. My favorite memorial on the grounds is the final resting place of Ham, the first chimp in space. People still leave bananas on the grave of the beloved primate who boldly went where no man had gone before. If you are a space nerd, like myself, I recommend a stop here when visiting New Mexico.
