Incredible! You can stay weeks hiking there! We did a big loop going to the south rim and back. Is possible to camp along the way, you just need a permit, what apparently was easier and cheaper. We did not because we didn't have a tent, only a camper van. Safe! Trails well kept. Would go back many times. No shower!!!!
IF u are planning on making this trip, be sure u have a very reliable vehicle and plenty of food and water, its a 100 mile drive from the town of alpine tx to this park and we only passed like 5 houses and 2 cars on the road, its really out in the middle of nowhere, and when u get to the park its a 65 mile drive thru the park on the main road if u dont get off on any of the trails off the main road, worth seeing, but you can forget about getting help if something happened this far out, cell phones did not work out here, even driving thru the park itself is some of the most remote counrty i have ever seen.
Was a wonderful visit to this park and I would highly recommend this park to anyone who visits there.
This National Park is a true treasure. It is Texas - at its best. We took the Sunset Limited (train) to Alpine and then travelled by car to the Park. The rangers and volunteers are so helpful and friendly; helping you identify the trails and sites that are not to be missed. The weather changed every day from heavy coats to shorts. The staff at the Park lodge (bar and restaurant) are so friendly and really great to chat with. We will be back.
So worth it. Just drive out here and experience the real West Texas. Gorgeous views, great places to explore, helpful people. We can't say enough because it is so vast we barely scratched the surface in our 4 day trip. We are already planning our next trip
Surrounded by beautiful vistas, temperature extremes from 80s to 20s in one day, calm days to hurricane force winds at night, lots of critters, lots of wildflowers, gorgeous clouds, and bluest skies ever seen! We enjoyed every minute of every day! We left the Park knowing that there's a greater hand in control of things than we are!
We have traveled for more years than I care to admit and on several continents, but we've never seen anything quite like the landscape and desert in Big Bend National Park. We learned that 3 mountain ranges run through this area, explaining why we were seeing different kinds of mountains within the same view (sharp and jagged, domed and rounded) as well as different colors. All of the staff we encountered were pleasant, helpful, and informative.Lots of things to do for all ages...long hikes, short hikes, views with no hiking, Rio Grande, history (old homesteads, etc), rowboat trip across the Rio Grande to a Mexican village (take your passports!) for a very good meal and real vanilla (!) to bring home.Yes, Big Bend National Park is a long way from anywhere, but it was well worth our visit. We were there only 4 full days, but we crammed a lot into them! We also met people who return every year. We highly recommend a visit.
Scenery & ease of numerous trails. Stayed in the park also two nights loved the terrain, the history any museums. Perfect weather to escape the cold of February.
We went there in January and it was not cold. The parking is amazing. With prairies and mountains. Different colors everywhere. It was near empty and we could travel with easy. We stayed outside but Chisos Mountain Lodge looked nice. We did not spot any animals except roadrunners.
Big Bend has beautiful sunsets and it's the best place to star gaze. Check out the natural hot tub and all of the hiking trails....awesome!
