We walked to the beach from our cruise ship early on the morning of the docking and the locals were already coming to the beach for the day. Very nice looking area with several boats just off the beach. Downtown is just a block away and lots of locals were seen going to an from downtown with their families. We were impressed by the town's cleanliness and the constant sweeping and cleaning that we saw taking place.
As crianças pequenas adoram e ficamos sem preocupação em relação a viagens para o litoral com água salgada.
While on an Amazon river cruise, we (6 adults) independently booked a guided tour with Gil Serique. This was our second time using Gil (we also booked him when in Santarem on same cruise). He lives in the area, is aware of the local sights to see, is extremely knowledgeable of area wildlife. Gil is very personable, eager to share his knowledge and his ecological concerns. He will fit the tour to your time lines and your interests, and if the tour is long, he will feed you as you travel. We had opportunity to climb a 14 story tower to view the forest canopy and we drove through (actually walked the streets of) the city of Belterra built by Ford in his failed attempt to set up a rubber factory. We would highly recommend him for his enthusiasm, knowledge and his ability to give you a feel for his country. His english was easily understood, he loves to tell you stories of the area and he is both charming and well read. He is quick to respond to requests through his web site.
Plenty of adventure stuff to do in the area. My thing was fishing and getting about in a boat to feel the Amazon. Talk to ecotourism operator Claudio of the Mae Natureza outfit for different options, or hang out in the general vicinity of his shop which is a gathering spot for good pizzas and caipirinha within view of the main square. The local carimbo music band Roda de Curimbó playing the square was amazing. Be prepared for surprises in your visit to Alter de Chão.
I can't think of a better place in Brazil to a week or just a quick weekend. Plenty of things to do good food and friendly people
Alter do Chao Beach is a beautiful beach area where you can take boat rides or just relax on the beach and enjoy the scenery.
It´s unbelievable that a river can be like that! White sand beaches, warm water! At night you have the small town atmosphere. You can enjoy music in the main square, some restaurants with different kinds of fishes.
People are friendly and nice there and there are amazing boat trips to Ponta de Pedras and Ponta do Cururu. It's worth visiting for at least three days.
Simple settings with the wonders of nature away from many of the modern touches of today's world. It's a great way to clear the anxieties to relax and rebuild for your return to the rat race!
We stayed in Alter Do Chao for a week and wished we'd stayed longer. We'll definately go back some day. Fantastic beaches, warm water and great people. The music in the square at night and the restaurants were excellent. We even danced the local Carimbo!!While we were in the square we met a guide called Ohad. He was brilliant. He took us upriver to the national forest and we spent a whole day exploring the lake ad river and hidden beaches with him too. His knowledge of the area was excellent and his English was good too. Later in the week, he invited us to his place for lunch and we stayed to watch the spectacular sunset over the river. Next time we plan to rent from him and see that view every night! Excellent guide and host who made our visit extra special. Nothing was too much for him - he was always super helpful and polite. His number is below for anyone who wants to have the same experience we did - wonderful!
