We try to stop by this beautiful cross at least once a year on our way down to visit my mother-in-law in Anna! IL. We like it because it not only has a great view of the area, but it causes is to take time and reflect on our savior and Lord. Someday, I want to take a blanket and have a picnic lunch and enjoy the cross and the beautiful scenery.
Must see place in the area. The cross is awesome and you can see it for miles around and looks really cool lit up at night. The drive up is scenic and once you get to the top the view is great. Nice gift shop with some glasses and shirts among other things. Cool hummingbirds hanging outside too.
This is worth the trip, just being on top of this hillside is amazing, it's breathtaking then to think all the work that went into this cross and what it stands for.
Despite it being a cold foggy cloudy day, we decided to venture to the top of the hill to see the cross. I am certain on a clear day the view from the top of the knob would have been great and viewing the cross from a distance would be great to see as well. While the cross at Effingham is larger, the cross at Bald Knob is granite and very impressive. For those wishing to travel the backroads of Illinois to see such a site, it is well worth the drive, with plenty to see and do along the way.
I'll never understand why people feel the need to despoil a beautiful natural scene with some monument or other. This particular one is surrounded in family drama and church controversy and fell into disrepair. Until relatively recently the thing was missing so many panels it looked like a hillbilly's smile. The cross is still hideous, IMO. It's covered in corrugated sheet metal and weeps rust. Enjoy the drive up and take in the views from the hilltop.
Interesting and moving story! Scenic view worth the side trip. Met some interesting people! The gift shop had a nice video and the people were not overly evangelistic.
A giant monument in the shape of a cross, it can be seen for miles across the top of the Shawnee National forest, thanks to the hills and beautiful view points all over the area.
This was an interesting attraction. The cross is nice, but for me, the drive to the cross was spectacular and the views are breathtaking. It is worth the trip for the scenery!
One of our final stops on the way home from Tennessee to Missouri. Beautiful fall colors and GPS only takes you to the top of the road--it is several miles down from there.
On a weekend wine visit, one of my friends wanted to take a drive up to see the cross, and I'm glad she suggested this. It really is impressive. There is a sense of peace when you are standing in the presence of this giant cross. After we visited, I started reading further information, and now I'm happy to say we have seen it. It's not far from Alto Pass or Cobden, only a 5 minute drive up the hill.
