I took a tour of the falls offered by a local boy who was waiting at the road by the highway. I'm glad I did as he showed me many areas most tourists don't get to see (hiked in the river for about an hour up to the main part of the falls). He charged $15 usd. Well worth it.The falls were beautiful and I got alot of great pictures.
It was closed on Monday but Byron was near the entrance and readily let us into another side entrance to experience the falls. He is an excellent guide to the falls! He knows every step for a safe and lovely experience. These falls are near to Boston Bay. It is very clean and well kept.
I've been visiting Reich (correct spelling, not Reach) Falls for over 20 years and on my last visit, with four children (9,9, 5 & 5) for the first time I did a "tour" with one of the guides. It was like a hike up the river, with part of the "hike" including swimming up/down the stream. Could not have done it without the guide who literally carried the smaller children over some of the more treacherous spots, and who guided me and the bigger children where to put our feet so we wouldn't slip, etc. It was a wonderful way to experience this beautiful spot. Our guide, Vaughn, was very patient and gracious and was fantastic with the children. It is a long drive from anywhere beyond Port Antonio (about 45 minutes from Port Antonio) proper, but absolutely worth it. I recommend making it part of a day trip to the area if you are not staying in Portland. Set out early, take snacks for the drive, try to get there by say 10,30am and spend an hour or two, then head to Boston for lunch (best jerk pork in Jamaica and hence the world), then go to one of Port Antonio's gorgeous beaches, whether Winnifred, Frenchman's Cove or San San.
We had a fantastic time climbing the falls. The drive was longer than I would have liked but our hotel driver made it an engaging experience. He stopped and showed us some the local highlights along the way and explained the local culture and agriculture. Our falls tour guide was also very kind and patient with us. He made it fun and entertaining. He took our water camera and took pictures of us along the way. These ended up being some our favorite pictures of our anniversary trip.
It rained for 2 days prior to our visit so we were unable to go into the water for safety reasons. However, we were given 50% discount on the entry fee and were still able to view the falls and walk along its edges for as far as we could go. I would suggest investing in a pool and proper lunch facilities to keep visitors entertained on days like those.
That river and falls is just amazing. I love the falls heading under the cave. So much fun, I did it so many times like a kid at Christmas. The park area is relaxing and just peaceful. Very reasonably priced too. The staff was friendly and attentive. Only recommendation is cleaning the rocks heading to the lush waters to the cave, its very slippery, like very slippery. This place is the bomb though. It in itself is different from Dunn's River, but different in a great way and in a little class by itself. Love it!!
The Falls are amazing and Beautiful _ We arrived late and they lets us go in for a quick dip and a photos - The caves to crawl through and the Life Guards Directed us even though we were past closing time - We came from Negril and would go again - It was an Amazing Visit and So Glad we could experience it - Thanks so Much
So much nicer than Dunn's River Falls... this area is breath-taking. The water is clear and inviting. I jumped from an outcropping and it was the best thrill. It's a great place to swim and explore.
We loved spending time at Reach Falls. It is beautiful and unspoiled for now (much nicer than Dunn's River). The vegetation surrounding it is lush and green and the falls are stunning. The water is crystal blue, perfect for swimming. We had Kurtis as our guide who was fantastic. He seamlessly guided us through caves up the waterfall and took photos of us swimming without getting the camera wet. If you go with a guide, I would advise you to tip generously if you enjoy yourself.
We really loved this, it was definitely our favourite waterfall experience in Jamaica. Beautiful water with a little adventure :)
