We arrived in Anchorage for two week trip. After traveling all day we decided to do something simple. The Center had interesting exhibits from different native cultures in Alaska. It was worth seeing once, but would not go again.
We enjoyed this museum because of the great displays and explanations that accompanied them. We have been more than once and would go back again.
This first nations heritage centre is first rate - the best we visited in Alaska with excellent, authentic models, a truly authentic village that made us think we could be actually living there in days of old, superb dance and drum concert, first rate artifact and crafts demonstrations and exhibitions, and a lovely souvenir shop that meets all needs in one space without any pressure to buy. Loved the place. Congratulations on an excellent work that teaches about the first nations culture and lets locals and tourists alike start to experience the culture first hand.
The dancing is bright and cheerful completely representing Alaska. The big windows give good light for photos and the seating is comfortable. I enjoyed the crafts for sale and most natives were making their crafts as watched.
This museums an excellent introduction to the native heritage of Alaska. The music and dance program in the Gathering Place was enjoyable. For me, the highlight was walking around the small lake, stopping at each of the displays and talking or listening to the interpreter stationed at each location. They helped me to better understand the diverse native tribes, histories and customs of historic native Alaskans.
I live here in Anchorage, and even still I visit this place every couple of years. It has an amazing amount of history and information about Alaska's Native Peoples and Alaskan History. You will be amazed by the way of live of the peoples of Alaska and the many excellent exhibits and demonstrations. The performances of the native dancers is absolutely enthralling, but call ahead of time to make sure of performance times. You won't be disappointed by this attraction if you have any intrest in Alaska History, and it's Native People groups.
Native Alaskans guide small groups from one authentic accommodation to the next. The visitors enter the authentic living spaces that are furnished as if in use. An explanation of the life of the people in the space is described. Plenty of time is available for questions. I think the tour ran a little long because of the many questions actually.
We have taken out of state guests to this place many times and all have found it worthwhile. There are authentic displays of the major native cultures as well as live performances. You can call ahead for a schedule. Plan to spend an hour.
Around a central lake the culture of the 5 types of native people is shown. It's a great opportunity to learn the differences. In every part we were welcomed by students of each different culture. They answered all of our questions with a big smile. In the main building there are demonstrations : dancing, sports, ...
I learned a lot visiting this place. It tells you a lot about their heritage and it was very unique and interesting. They have performances of their traditional music and dances. They also have a place outside for you to sit and eat which is beautiful and relaxing. Everyone should definitely make a stop here!
