Known for its only surviving wooden made fort, a great walk inside and along the river overlooking the bridge, spectacular colors of trees-an extra bonus.
Well it is the state capitol, and maybe if you are from Maine, its interesting in that respect, but as out of state visitor, there wasn't much here, except a good place to stop for lunch driving on to our next destination. It didn't help that hte actual building is closed on the weekend.
Enough said. Please see my other reviews regarding the major human rights and Constitutional problems with Augusta and Maine in general.
Went here one time with a small group from school and enjoyed it. Give it a chance you might like it!
I haven't been to tour other state capitol buildings but ours in Maine is fantastic. I probably had the nickel tour when I was in the local school system but I don't remember much of it. The two chambers are very nicely kept. The hall of flags offers a great view up into the dome. The exhibits on the lower level show some nicely done scenes with some of the wildlife that can be found throughout the state.
Our tour guide, Dan, was the best. We had an excellent tour on Thursday of this week. Dan was very knowledgeable and even introduced us to one of the Maine State Senators. We'll worth the trip.A must do in Augusta.
We visited late on a Friday afternoon so nothing was in session. The staff was very helpful and invited us to tour all of the House and Senate floors. The rotunda is beautiful and the balcony overlooking Augusta gives a lovely view. Beautiful artwork.
This is an impressive structure dominating the skyline of Augusta. The Legislature was not in session but we were run through very tight security entering the building. There was a tour available that lasts about an hour but we decided to wander around the building by ourselves. While the outside of the building is impressive, we were not overwhelmed by its rather plain and colorless interior. Both the senate and house of representatives chambers were rather bland and business like. Perhaps that is a testament to Maine's focus on economy and business sense. We have toured many other state capitols that are much more ornate.
The state capitol in Augusta is not the largest. But the architecture is very nice, the interiors are interesting and our guide on the tour was very helpful and told some insightful stories. Definitely worth visiting.
Small grounds, easy to walk; good to visit. Dome being restored; varied architecture. Park nearby. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
