I just tried booking a 7 day stay at Swallow Falls (Sat - Sat) but the MD state park system has implemented a rule that you must stay both Fri and Sat of every weekend which is absurd. I have never heard of such a policy and we are frequent campers. So even though we were willing to stay for seven nights, they would not accept our reservation. Seems like they only cater to locals who can make it there by Friday night. I understand not wanting to make a reservation for a 1-night stay but this is just ridiculous.
Love this place. I always go here whether it's summer or winter. Loop trail includes 3 waterfalls. Restrooms available. Donation box at gate, I feel good giving this facility money. Definately a must see. Not far from the deep creek area.
This park is amazing. They have stairs as well as a handicapped walk ways that we actually used do to the icy weather. The views are simply spectacular. I would advise not going in the winter due to the slip factor. Summer would be the best This park is nature at it's very best. Don't forget to visit the campsite of Mr. Firestone & Thomas Edison. Very neat place!
We visited this park at the end of November during a big snow fall. It was so pretty and the waterfalls were beautiful. The rocky trail was a lot of fun!!!! We were able to manage fine with a 5 month, 4 and 8 year olds, but I would not recommend for anybody who has trouble getting around or is unsure on your feet. We loved it!!! So glad that we made it there!
We hiked the short trail to Swallow Falls, Muddy creek falls and Tolliver falls in February over President's day weekend. It was gorgeous. The stairs were incredibly slippery, and we were glad we brought our hiking poles for some grip.
I have been visiting Swallow Falls since I was little and it never disappoints. Such a beautiful area and relaxing place. This trip was my 4 yo daughters first visit and she had a blast. If you love the outdoors this is a must see place!
We visit the Falls every time we go to DCL. They have great trails to hike with the family and the water falls are amazing. A "must-visit" if you've never been.
We had a great time at the park. While we didn't have snow during our visits we did have lots of icy patches, especially on the steps. The trails are easy to navigate and afford some great picture locations. Our 81 year old dad did very well with the trails. Be aware that many people bring dogs that are not well-behaved. Also, we found it disgusting that people passed the gatehouse and ignored the very reasonable access fee that was on the honor system.
Love to take a long hike along the trail in the Winter. Gorgeous waterfall. Pet friendly a must do in Deep Creek.
We were spending a long weekend in Deep Creek Lake and decided to go to Swallow Falls State Park and hike the falls area. It was not too cold but there was snow on the ground which made walking on the banks of the river a little slippery but all in all it was worth it. The falls were not completely frozen and they were beautiful. Coming in the late Fall is great because the view is better without the leaves.
