15 minutes in a car or 25 minutes in Holmenkollen "Trikk" will take you to Mother Nature on her best. Here you can walk around for hours, and sometime you hardly see anyone. Peaceful and lovely areas wherever you go! Several places where you can buy food and drinks, or enjoy food that you bring along yourself. Far away from all traffic.
It is amazing to visit a place where more people carry skis on the subway than backpacks! I love Oslo for this reason. People make the Saturday and Sunday pilgramage from central Oslo to ski the Nordmarka just by taking the tube to the end of the line. You get off at the last station on two of the lines and the trails are right there and within 1 minute you are skiing through the forest and hills and lakes of the Nordmarka. What a wonderful resource to have at your door step. I cannot think of another world captial that has such a wonder aspect. The nordmarka is a wonderous place full of snow covered forest trees, winding paths for walkers, snow bikers and skiers each have their own which take you by frozen lakes you can walk/ski/bike across and you will see Norweigns sitting around a camp fire having a picnic. Some of the trails take you high up i the hill and you can see out over Oslo and the fjords and whats nice is that there are travel huts scattered throughout the Nordmarka so you are near to far from a warm fire, a cup of coca and a comfort stop. judging from the sheer number of smiley faces and the shouts a hei hei as i skied the trails of the Nordmarka - the Norweigns seem to love thier Nordmarka too. I think summer time would be equally lovely and all at the end of a tube line!
Surrounding Oslo, you will find hills up to about 500 meter above sea level. To the north, west and northeast is a broad belt of forest, lakes and pathes. During winter you might find more than 5.000 km of well prepared cross country ski slopes - inviting you to free visits. The lakes are beautiful - in between the different hills. No traffic is allowed. No cars. Spread over the huge area, you will find cottages welcoming you to a small - or a larger meal. During wintertime with an inviting open fire. Plan your trip and enjoy!
We took the train from downtown Oslo so I could go for a trail run in Nordmarka. The place was bustling on a Sunday afternoon, as it is clearly a popular outdoor destination for residents of Oslo. Not on a par with Central Park in NYC or Stanley Park in Vancouver, but still a nice escape from the city.
Great area where you can walk (or ski, or cycle) around for days if you want to. Well sign posted with blue and/or red marks on the trees. Endless possibilities from short, light walks, to more then one day hikes. Bring something to eat and drink (or go to one of the cabins that offer food).
The area north of the city is even with public transport easy to reach (subwayline 1 towards Frognerseteren) From this endstation you can explore the vast forest and lake area. Nice to relax and some point give you great views of the backcountry and even the city. Walking downhill back to the city you can go to Holmenkollen Skyjumping tower and skimuseum.
It was great experience on this trip. Peaceful place. It was very cold when we were here but we were fascinating with lakes.
An extra day in Oslo, don't miss the opportunity to take a tour into the enourmous recreation area called Nordmarka. Excellent area for most type outdoor sports and recreation and YOU will find all information you need on the net.
