Visited over the September school holidays and had a great time looking around the gardens and through the house itself. Chris is a great host.
We were so excited that the owner of the home was available to do the guided tour. It was so lovely having someone so passionate about the mansion be able to tell us the full history was we were shown around. There is something for everyone whether you love history, art, antiques, building and construction, interior decorating, farming etc. Well worth the visit.
Elegant beautiful building Hauted so i was told but that doesnt phase me . Ideal Wedding areaMemorabilia from yesteryear. 20ft high gold leaf ceilings staircase 1865 Owned by the Morgan family Fully Restored to grandeur
Thank goodness for TA, I might not known about this great place! What a treasure. Chris and his family are clearly passionate about their amazing home. Very welcoming. So much history; so much to see. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to see such a grand house. We even spotted an Echidna in the grounds! Bonus!
Have visited here a couple of times, both were excellent. Had a delightful afternoon tea here and also had a look at some of the rooms. Excellent hosts, excellent home to visit.
Having limited time we had to opt to do the self guided tour rather than with the gentleman of the home. We did speak briefly to him and I am sure he would present a great tour. There are information sheets in a lot of areas so this was a help for us. There are just so many rooms to explore and cabinets are packed full of various antique collections plus the exquisite furniture like the Grandfather clock that once belonged to King Edward VII. It is obvious that the small family can not manage to maintain this stately home to the standard of those you see in England. Plenty of steps and around every corner something wonderful. The gardens are somewhat in need of a green thumb - where are the volunteers - surely Bathurst has some people who would love to help in that area. We were lucky enough to see the peacock showing his tail feathers as we wandered the gardens. Absolutely a gem - what a privilege to live in such a wonderful place. If I lived in Bathurst I'd volunteer to dust or garden - great value tour!
Abercombie House is certainly impressive from the outside. There is also lots to see inside - so many priceless treasures in cases, on walls - you need to look closely or you'll miss some fascinating things. To actually live there must be so special. The family (and it's not large) have their work cut out to preserve such a treasure. They need some 'grey nomads' to spend some time there in the garden or doing some maintenance. The gardens and grounds need some work and it would then be amazing!
Abercrombie House is a wonderful old mansion, the likes of which we have not seen anywhere else in Australia. You would need to visit Europe to see a house as interesting and as richly decorated as this one. It is also filled with the most interesting artefacts from all over the world, and being privately owned, the hosts are keen to ensure every visitor is made very welcome and given the royal treatment during the tours taken. We will soon be going there for a fourth visit because it's the kind of place that is always appealing to those who love grandeur, style and wonderful architecture.
Australia abounds in open old houses, some of them lived in, some of them haunted. Abercrombie House is both. It’s actually more like a Scottish castle than a house, as befitted a prosperous Scottish colonial landowner. The Morgan family lives there now, seemingly at peace with the ghost. They are probably all too busy to notice it anyway, if we are to go by the schedule of events at the house, which you can read about on www.abercrombiehouse.com.au. I went there with a tour group on a sunny Sunday Bathurst afternoon, and master of the house Christopher Morgan was there to show us around. It was one of the most enthusiastic guided tours I’ve ever had anywhere, and I’ve had a few. He and his sister, who grew up in the house, were just tots when their parents bought it from the Stewart family. Now he lives in it with his wife and their teenage daughter and son. He’ll tell you about some of the ghostly experiences he has had. The guided tour takes you through all their lived-in living quarters. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to take one of the guided tours, you do can do a selfie. But be sure to acquaint yourself with available times on the net before you go. Be prepared to cope with lots of steps. Don’t be deterred if that is likely to bother you: the exterior, the ground floor, and the gardens will keep you interested anyway.
I took a group of friends here for a girls weekend. We had a wonderful time. The facilities were clean and neat. The price was very good and included breakfast. Great for families with young kids. The owners are lovely, welcoming and easy going.
