If you love rock crystals and dinosaurs this is the place for you. Located in the old public school building is also very interesting! We enjoyed it.
We were amazed by the excellent displays of minerals, their uses and especially the variety and number of fossils on display. The lighting in the displays was excellent and the information about the displays was to the point and not long winded. The staff were very friendly and helpful.I will be taking my Grand daughter back for a visit very soon.
What an experience. Was very pleasantly surprised to see the amount of crystals and fossils they in this museum. They even have a cast of a T-Rex dinosaur. I understand that most of the crystals came from a private collection and what is on display is only about a 1/3 of what they collected. The crystals are placed out on a rotation, so each visit you get to experience new ones. Well worth taking the kids along, even if only for the dinosaur.
Frankly we were just looking to fill in time, but in the end we and the kids really enjoyed our time at the museum. The mineral and crystal samples are excellent, best I've seen and so amazingly colourful. The fossil section was also very interesting and a great lesson for the kids in the chronology of life on earth. Really fascinating stuff. Oh, and the staff also deserve a mention for their friendliness!
A must see for visitors and locals, a bit like the Tardis, more than what you would expect, you can eyeball a dinosaur, if the Hugh skeleton still had its eyeballs, the mineral exhibition is a must see, if only for the lights and colours
Main attraction is a genuine full sized T Rex skeleton in the exhibit. The personal collection of Warren Sommerville containing numerous fossils, precious gems, rocks and lots of interesting items. Very interesting exhibits for adults and loved by the kids. Great attraction at a reasonable price.
Situated in the middle of town in a lovely old building. I love crystals so this display was of great interest to me. Really well set out and displayed and some wonderful examples of a variety of beautiful minerals and crystals. The fossil display was also very interesting. Leave around an hour if you are reading everything and watching the videos. Price was $12.00 adult (approx.)
Small private collection Of fossils and geological samples. There are even dinosaur eggs! Well worth of a visit
The Australian Fossil and Mineral museum is located in the middle of Bathurst within an old historic school house. It is also the home of the Somerville's collection, a lifetime work by the professor. There are hundred of mineral, crystal and fossil specimens here as well as a large collection of fossils in amber with a magnifier to have a close look. See minerals from a selection of mines and a variety of states within Australia and from throughout the world. The main feature is a specimen of the only complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton which is awe inspiring. You can get some great photo's from the mezzanine floor. There is plenty of parking in the area for 2 hours, so you may need to move your vehicle if you wish to stay at the museum for a longer period.
I had a great time visiting this museum. It had a fantastic mineral display that made the visit worth it. Then there were the Dinosaur displays that my daughter loved. The staff were great and the location is excellent.
