This property and museum forms part of a tour of several historic buildings in Beechworth. The street that's in the building is very interesting.
We took our 4 year old and 7 year old to this and they were given look and find sheets which kept them busy and allowed us time to actually look at all the interesting items.
Lots of info on hand and the displays were generally good. The ''street" had some good historical things on view. The birds looked in need of some attention but a fabulous taxidermist collection.
This museum could be better organised. The idea of a recreated C19th street, useful in some settings, seems redundant is such a well preserved living town. Helpful and willing staff, but the exhibits need rethinking
The Burke Museum is a museum in Beechworth about Beechworth history and area.I went into the museum thinking it was going to be about the Burke and Wills expedition across Australia and was disappointed to see that there were only a few items form the expedition and very little information about the expedition, and nothing on the man himself. The museum was just renamed after him. The items where fun to see but since I had expected something else I was disappointed. The museum was a strange mix of natural history and Beechworth history. And a strange Arcade displaying how the streets looked back in it's heyday. It was a nice stop from the heath and some curious with some curious items. And the ticket included a visit to The Kelly Gang Vault which was well worth a visit. Highlights* Tasmanian Tiger* Burke and Wills expedition items. * Mt. Buffalo Wheelbarrow
Plenty to see in this small but jam packed museum. Lots of history of the area on view and much to read about. Reasonably priced and also gives you entrance to Ned Kelly's vault. Well set out. Highly recommend a visit.
A well thought out local museum. Each display was interesting. Loved the street scape at the rear of the museum.
Wide range of information well presented about the very interesting history of Beechworth. Lots of photos and artefacts and a good representation of what life was like in the gold rush times.
The building itself is very interesting (a Victorian reading room/club) and it is filled with memorabilia of times past in Beechworth. Of special interest were the street recreations which are interesting as was the collection of memorabilia from the wars.
Heaps on display with lots of info. Loved how kids were given a sheet of items to find...kept them interested!!
