Lake Powell currently down by about 110 feet due to persistent drought in the west, so it is either a darn long walk to the water from the parking area, or a drive necessitating a four wheel drive vehicle through loose sand to get to the beach.
Due to my friends and my procrastination, we didn't get to the lone rock campground until quite late (3am). It was however contrary to what many folks say, super easy to find. They also have a convenient pay station for after hours folks like us where you can pay for entrance fee and camping by card. Bc it was dark and we knew there were no designated camping spots here, we drove in a little past a building w bathrooms and put up camp. We didn't want to keep driving and risk getting stuck. I woke up just before sunrise to see the beauty of a lake Powell sunrise! Which I recommend not missing! There are tons of trails and a big hill for four wheeling. We were there the second to last weekend in sept and it was still packed; RVs lined the beach which isn't very pretty. We did decide to move camp to be closer to the water, although the dunes were nice bc we didn't have neighbors and had some privacy. I highly recommend at least an SUV... 4 wheel drive is really handy because even close to the water, the sand is very fine. BE CAREFUL! We got stuck w an all wheel drive SUV. We didn't have a boat and still had fun, but we were only there for 2 days. One other word of wisdom... Do NOT leave your floats unattended. Someone stole 3 floats of ours in just 30 minutes. Lock your stuff up! Also, if you are looking for tent only and your vehicle allows, drive all the way to the end of the beach (it's kind of a Little peninsula ) you will have less RVs as they can't make it out there. Oh and get a boat. If we were spending any more time out there, we would have been miserable without one!
Interesting landscape well maintained beach but hard to get to without 4 wheel drive. Good facilities and camping is available
I camped at Lone Rock beach for 2 nights and it was amazing!! the beach was busy with a small crowd but it didn't feel like it because there was so much space to spread out! Once night fell, it became this cozy little place where every group had their own space and it never felt crowded. For $10/night/car for camping it really isn't bad especially if you compare to just south of the border in Arizona they want over $25/night/car. My only issue is that the porta-johns are still closed until April, otherwise AWESOME!!
If you want a place to camp near page, this is terrific. Peaceful falling asleep to the sound of the waves and lots of fun during the day!I went to Lone Rock Beach during my first camping weekend as an adult this past weekend (June 2014). The entrance fee for the day was $15 and the camping fee was $10 for a total of $25 to camp. We parked the car up where the sand was still packed enough to not get stuck in our crossover and walked down to the water on a fairly steep dune. After some playing in the cold waters of Lake Powell, we went for a tour of antelope canyon and decided to set up camp when we got back since it was still pretty busy from all the daytime visitors. We found a spot when we returned next to a fire pit and dragged all of our camping gear to the edge of the water and set up camp. It cooled down drastically from the 80-90s during the day to the 70s at night. It wasn't as quiet as the night before in Flagstaff (Lockett Meadow) but it was still pretty peaceful save for a group of teenagers who were up talking and drinking. I slept like a baby regardless.Negatives: The showers were broken.Positive: Toilets available for use.
This was a last minute camping spot I found on a site listing it as a "free" campground. Though we paid $15 to enter park and another $10 to camp we were ultimately very happy with our experience! Sand was fine, white and soft. Lake was beautiful with the mountains in the background and the "lone rock" in the water. There were A LOT ofother campers there but everyone was pleasant and all was peaceful and quiet by 10 or 11. An unbeatable experience sleeping only feet from the water listening to the waves. I highly recommend this experience!
WE went swimming here. The water has a lot of sediment in it so its not too clear and you may encounter tumbleweed in the shallows. The depth quickly drops off from the shoreline. Its pretty easy to get into the water but this area is definitely dominated by RV's and motorboats which can be a little intimidating when swimming. There were a couple nice places where people were tent camping but in the heat of the summer I think that would have been challenging to sleep.
Been there already two years ago, was one of the most impressive spots on my california trip. Now I went there again on a trip across the states. Absolutely love this place. Started a bit stupid: despite we drove a Chevy Tahoe we got stuck in the sand. Other campers helped us with letting pressure out of the tires and then you can drive on. This place is really great, very nice view, you can park on the beach and install your tent or camper. A few people bring their boats and jet skis. It's a very good mood between the people. You will definitely not regret it to go there.
Have a stroll along to see where River Song (the astronaut) Killed the doctor on the edge of lake Silencio. Lovely beach and great views over Lake Powell.
The site is good for camping and beach activities. Regarding to the view, the lone rock looks interesting but not as gorgeous as other places in along the Lake Powell.
