We drove up here twice to look around and take a hike. Loved the drive up Zimmerman Trail, as well as the view from the top. Billings is a great place to visit.
The Rimrocks are called The Rims, they are made of sandstone and were the shore of the ocean was eighty million years ago. All over this area you can find structures that are the same and down into Wyoming. They have often been called Rimrock Beach because there were always girls sun tanning up there in High School. This has often been a place where young adults get together and cars have been driven off for reasons that are unknown to me. I have parts from these cars that are from the 1950s, the earliest I have found was a Ford Model T. They have always been excellent for rock climbing, but the sandstone can crumble apart. Up on the Rims is where the airport is, so at eighty feet higher than the Yellowstone Valley, the scenery is incredible.
I love the Rimrocks view it allows you so see the city on a hole new perspective on Billings. you can see so much more from a higher point of view and its a great spot to go for a walk or a little rock climb.
Our grandson's favorite place to go in Billings!! Had to experience ourselves. Nice place to walk and view the city.
It's a shelf outcropping above the town. Sorry nothing special. We left the town from this area so it was not out of our way. Honestly, not worth a special trip
On a clear day you can see the whole Billings area. The road runs past the airport. It was the Fourth of July and all the Cliffside parking was roped off. The houses in the area were spectacular.
The paths are not well marked but that's a big part of the draw. Once you explore beyond the area immediately adjacent to the parking lot atop Zimmerman Trail you realize the topography is fantastic and the views stunning. The parkland goes on and on for acres and much of it is unspoiled. Go on a clear day or perhaps sunrise or sunset when the lighting is stunning. A must see!
Sandy trails to the bluffs overlooking Billings. Explore as much or little as you please. Great for dog walking and mountain biking too. Fantastic views.
The Rimrocks are unique to Billings, and they provide magnificent views of the city! We walked the trails in Zimmerman Park and were able to see for miles. Very remarkable experience, don't miss this!
First of all, there is basically little to no signage, so good luck finding the place w/o a map app on your handheld. The road up is easy enough, it's the same one that takes you to the airport, but there's not much to point you west to Zimmerman Park (about 5 miles west). Once you get to Zimmerman Park, there's one paved trail that leads 50 yards out to a monument to the Zimmermen Brothers. From there you are left to a hodgepodge of unmaintained dirt paths that spread out in several directions. There is no signage or discernible loop. The entire park is littered with broken glass - a mind-boggling amount actually. The Billings Parks Dept or whoever maintains this area should be embarrassed!! Finally, while it is true that the Rimrocks provide a panoramic vista to take in Billings, may of the scenic Vistas have phone and power lines directly in your line of sight. This place is a complete waste of time.** PET OWNERS - lots of glass, foxtails and rattlesnakes **
