What a lovely day to spend in Birmingham and see its history, there is plenty to see and you are near the Chinese quarter
Very well presented, guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. A pleasant way to spend a few hours and fascinating that this bit of local history is still in the heart of brum!
Wonderfully preserved back to back housing in the heart of Birmingham showing just what it was like to live in past times. Very informative guide who told the tales of the famillies living there.Highly recommended,
our tour guide was superb, very knowledgeable - i went with my Aunt who grew up in similar housing in Aston and she had a fabulous time
We booked our tour and were taken around by a very knowledgeable, friendly guide. Be prepared for some very steep stairs!
We recently visited Birmingham for Crufts. Having a few extra days, we looked for some intelligent ways to spend some time. Given the glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, we decided to give Back to Backs a try. I won't repeat the other positive reviews, other than to say that the tours and settings deserve all the positive feedbacks. By far, the best thing to do (other than the dog show) in Birmingham However, the reservation process leaves something to be desired. You can't go without reservations. You can phone or email to reserve a place for a tour at a fixed time. Since we're from overseas, we decided to reserve by email 2 weeks before our visit. We got an automated response immediately, promising a reservation within 72 hours. When we had not heard back in a week, we sent off another email and finally got our reservation. We can't understand why National Trust can respond to a phone call instantly but can't manage to respond to emails in a week. In the 21st century, if you offer an email option, you should be prepared to respond in one business day (or even 72 hours). If you can't do this consistently, don't offer the option.
An excellent way to spend a couple of hours on a wet weekend. We absolutely LOVED the Back to Backs. Our tour guide, Neal, was fabulous. He really helped the attraction to come alive. It was fascinating to learn about how people lived in the 1800's and to see the taylor's shop. The homes have been carefully restored and it was interesting to hear the stories of people's lives. Our six year old loved it. We finished with a visit to the old fashioned sweet shop on the corner. The only negative is that you have to book a tour (it's owned by the National Trust), but it's nigh on impossible to get through on the phone. We eventually turned up just before lunch and managed to book in for a time mid-afternoon. We were lucky, I guess. Having said that, it was great - and I'd do it again. Just do it!!!
Brilliantly refurbished by the National Trust. A guided tour of a fascinating little area of the city centre where people used to live in crowded close proximity. Authentic and insightful.
This must be one of the most unusual National Trust properties, but well worth visiting. Each of the houses has been re-created to represent a particular period in time. There is also a small museum. You have to go on a guided tour, usually about eight people, but the standard of the tour is very high. It lasts about 1 hour, 15 minutes. I would warn visitors that the stairs are very steep, winding and narrow and you need to be reasonably agile to cope with them (but I am 68 and not super agile).
